My first post

hello all, we recently purchased a FB, we have already had some work done on the brakes ( drum ) and a head gasket replacement .
We know very little about cars, just that we love the FB's and the EK's
( we also have an EK tucked away under its car cover )
My question is that whilst driving the FB the petrol fumes are very strong, any ideas anyone ???

Is your fume problem, only with a full tank, or at any level?
What have you checked so far?

Welcome horrydog, the thing I would be checking is does the exhaust poke out the back past the bumper?
On the way home from the nationals this year the chrome tip fell off my exhaust so it finished about 4 inches under the boot and me and my passenger were gassed out for about the last 300 k's of the trip ,

Welcome horrydog, as Thommo said it can be a few things.

Mine is very fumey when filled, I have since found there are 2 holes beside the fuel sender. Once the level gets down a bit it goes. Alot of the tanks develop rust/pinholes due to water getting into the boot.

But that is not to say its whats causing your problem.

Welcome aboard. Got any holes or rubbers that have worn or shrunk on the fire wall? Fumes may be blowing through from the engine bay...???

Also you'll have to resize your images down to about 500 pixels to fit the sceen...

Hi Horrydog,

Sounds like pin holes in the top of the tank to me in and around the fuel sender unit.

You can fix this with "Metal Mend" for fuel tanks. Roll the putty in your hand and push it into the pin holes. Sets like - well err, um metal!

We havent tried anything, except lighting a smoke and I'm still here
The length of the exhaust isnt the problem, and i dont think it matters how much fuel is in the tank.
The smell is stronger when you open the boot.
We will investigate the areas that you have mentioned.

I have the same problem but mainly when it is full I was guessing a seal around the sender but will also chec for pin holes (after i put in the new water pump and recored radiator tomorrow night )

Your avatar is fine. The other pic you posted up was so big it pushed all the text off the computer screen. Try it again but resize the pic down to 500 pixels. I'm sure everyone would like to see pics your EK and FB sedans...

found pin holes in mine today unusual for Smooth to be right
Cleaned the top of the tank and drove around the block to locate where it was coming from sealed it up tomorrow I will do a big run to test for fumes

hi all

removed the bog from on top of the tank. filled tank with petrol and there was a veritable flood at the top of the tank. had to drive around with all the windows open as the smell is so strong. we are thinking of taking the ek fuel tank and putting it into the fb, any advice on that ????
the fb is our daily driver and the ek is under wraps, so more important that the fb is kept on the road.

It's getting harder to find tanks that aren't full of pinholes from rust. It took me 3 tanks and even then I still got one with a couple just around the sender. I can live with those as they are an easy repair.
