Sounds like a traumatic.
The turbo boxes (or at least the Conformadore TH350) have a "wire" for the detent (kickdown), but it is more like "coathanger wire" (mechanical) than "electrical wire". Pull the wire, and the car drops a gear. The wire is connected by a Bowden cable to a sliding linkage on the carb - only pulls on the cable as the throttle approaches WOT.
The traumatics have an electrical switch on the accelerator pedal which drives a solenoid valve. The solenoid does the kicking down.
I can remember being told that running without a detent is not good for the longetivity of the gearbox, but I can't find where I read it.
Cheers,
Harv

Yes, Tri-Matics (except HG/LC) have a solenoid kickdown, just like the TH400. They are triggered by a switch near the accelerator pedal.
TH350, TH700 & HG/LC Tri-Matic have a cable kickdown, operated by the carby linkage.
The electronic TH700 (real name 4L60-E) has all shifting operated by the engine ECU.
