new tunnel

ok guys im hoping to mount my 5 speed celica box up before i move my fb elsewhere while i build my new house and i was wondering what happens with the crossmember underneath the tunnel when it is replaced do u have to design a new one cause shorely this area must be weakened after cutting it out just want to make shore before i dive in and cut the crossmember i find out i did a booboo if u guys have any pics and info it would be much appreciated. thanks troy.

Troy do a search on auto tunnels, it should bring up pics of what others have done including me.
But you are right you NEED to replace it if you remove it.

I would be happy just to get a carboard template that i could use to mark out the minimum amount needed to fit a celica 5 speed in a manual floor. I am going to weld in a modified HJ trans hump after i fit the box.
can anyone help with this or do i just keep hacking away until the box doesnt hit anywhere???.
I figure with thousands of thse conversions running around out there someone would have made template by now... yes/no.

Castlemaine Rod Shop have a tunnel for conversions and at $95 (well was when I got it) takes all the guessing out and allows you to run standard auto carpet. Pretty hard to beat, seen these used in quite a few cars now. The cost of the tunnel is offset by the time saved and no custom carpet being needed.
It also acts as a guide as too how much to cut.

yeh i have the crs tunnel and i checked for picks in the posts but they had been deleted in your post devilrod. does the tunnel section of the crossmember have to resemble the existing so they join up or what

Thats how we did it. Fabbed up a new one to weld back in. Slightly bigger and follows the tunnel nicely.
Don't know why the pics would be gone though, I'll look into it...

My understanding i that as long as you are using chassis kit (rails) with trans/ box crossmember between the two, then you can safely cut the tunnel support and neatly box off the ends of the exposed supports where you cut them. CRS advise that the chassis kit used with the crossmember provide enough support to stop the floor and tunnel from flexing as long as the tunnel is welded in properly, which I have found.
I drilled small holes along the new tunnel edges and existing floor to drop rosette welds in, then stitch welded the tunnel in on to the rosettes. Engineer likes it and is strong as... hope this helps. Cheers, Matt
