Head gasket replacement

Moved this query to here rather than where it was first brought up in my wanted post. What is spray paste and is it needed on head gaskets? Retro mentions in my wanted post but in all the heads I have fitted over the years i have never used any paste or sealer. Just cleaned off the head and block well and put the gasket straight on. Anyone care to convince me to do otherwise?

I've used Hylomar (as used by Rolls Royce), brushed on both sides of the gasket. you can use the spray on but been told brush on is best.
Old school Mechanics used spray on silver paint because of the high content of lead.
These sealers are mainly used on metal gaskets for better sealing.

iv used hylomar, it was on a rb30 (vl) motor with 2 head gaskets running 18psi boost
it lasted longer than the pistons

I was always taught that good machining and good quality gaskets will out last any extra sealants.

But

I've seen the copper spray on stuff used with good effect and the head on which it was used was a little dodgy to begin with. Did the job though and got the engine running again.
