I just heard back from the guy that cleaned up my fuel tank for the sedan. He said its full of holes and will need a heck of alot of work to get it usable again. So my question to all you knowledgable gurus out there are:

1. Do I spend hours welding and repairing my old tank?
2. Try to find an original replacement tank in excellent condition?
3. Find someone who makes new stainless tanks?

I don't mind which of the 3 to do but my restrictions are that I am running out of money and time to complete the job.

All responses are welcomed.

If you are tight on money, a stainless tank may not be an option. The ones Marty Dean is making are fantastic quality, but not cheap.

From what I have seen with fuel tanks most rust holes are in the top sheet.
There was someone on here that replaced the whole top of their tank, can't remember who if was!

I have a POR tank repair kit here that is designed to fix pin holes in the tank with some cloth that is supplied.

If you know what you are doing weld it. Ive found doing it with the oxy is better as you get a better sealing tank. One tiny pinhole and the petrol pisses out of it. You can test it by pressurising it a pouringsoapy water over the area. If it bubbles you have a leak. It takes ages to find them all even if the weld looks good.

The top has a stack of pin holes and thin spots in it (plus a few large dents) t
There are also some small holes in the base of the tank. Not sure if its worth saving.

We had exactly the same issues with our FE van. I chased the problems for 2 years which included a significant amount my time and money trying to fill holes in the top of the tank with various epoxies. Eventually we got Martin to make us a couple of new tanks and I recently fitted the one in the van. No they are not cheap but I should have put the $200 I wasted on the old tank towards the new one. Martin Dean's tanks are fantastic quality, look very much like a stocky except a bit deeper and take about another 20litres.

I just sealed my tank yesterday using a KBS Coatings kit.

The kit comes with a cleaner, rust converter, and urethane coating. It's easy to apply and seems to have done a good job of covering all of the inside of the tank. It's recommended for pin holes so it may work well for you.

If I can't find a replacement tank. I'll weld the holes, cut out and weld the thin spots I can see and use one of the products you have mentioned
