Hi Everyone

My wipers work great...

...except that they wipe 'downwards' away from the windsreen towards the engine...

When I turn them off they both 'park' in the same horizontal position.

I'm using masking tape to simulate the position of the wiper arms.

The connector arm assembly under the dash are on correctly.

Help...!

Are you saying that they park in the correct position?

Yes they return to the horizontal position. Instead of the wipers going up twoards the windscreen they travel down towards the bonnet/engine.

Did you touch any of the park adjusters and settings internally?

I removed the gear and cross shaft (Item 7) on page 12-92 of the EK manual. From what I can make out underneath the switch plate assembly it makes contact with the gear and cross shaft. I have changed the position of the gear and cross shaft but it always returns back to the same position.

I am guessing its mechanichal not electrical , are you SURE all the linkages are on the right way around ? Is the arm on the motor shaft on correctly ?

Yep I think its mechanical too.

I'll go back to square one with it all and take a fresh look at it tomorrow...

Sounds like the lever assembly is on the shaft of the motor 180 degrees out. Essentially your wipers are parking in the vertical position but you have the wipers fitted to each shaft 45 degrees out to compensate.

You can always stick your head under the dash of your other car to see how it should be .

I recon the arms would be on the same anyway, elec or vac, would they not?

I think your wiper post linkage has been installed in the 12 o'clock position instead of the 6 o'clock position.
I hope this makes sense.

Thinking about it...

There are two possibilities. The motor is running backwards (unlikely), or the rods are 180 degrees out of rotation either at the wiper posts (like Chris said) or at the motor.

Don't know, but the vacuum motors oscillate (if that's the right word) and the electric ones rotate constantly in one direction.

Peter came over on Sat arvo and we double checked everything. Arms, pivots, gears, rotors, cranks, motor, terminals, wires, linkages... Everything looked spot on.

Looking at the manual and Peters EK it looked like the crank shaft position is at about the 10 o'clock position. When we positioned mine at that spot and turned the wipers on the crank shaft wouldn't take up immediately and so the wipers didn't move immediately. This got us thinking that the 'park' position was out even though when the wipers went to 'park' at the horizontal position.

Looking at the manual on page 12-94 point number 17 it says "To adjust the parking position of the crank rotate the head of the hexagon pin as required using a 5/16 .in A.F. spanner, Fig 12F-11."

You can see the hexagon pin in the pic below.



Using some strips of masking tape as a guide we rotated the crank so the wipers moved up about 45 degrees. I think I turned the hex pin about 1 and a half turns approx. As you turn the crank you can watch the wiper pivot move into position. We turned the wipers on and viola! Success.

I think I must have spent about 3 hours trying to work it out... ...with the last 30 seonds of roatating the crank actually fixing the problem.

Anyway I learnt something new which is what it's all about. Thanks for your help too Pete.
