keeping it simple,i ran out of petrol with my gauge showing just under half full. would this be the gauge or the fuel sender. is this a common problem? thanks

Probably the sender.

Sometimes the float sticks and doesn't drop as the level in tank goes down, and sometimes it's just worn out.

I'd take the sender out and check that first.

Mine does that too. I just don't let it drop below half.
I think it's nice that it's so optimistic

The other thing to do is check its earthing properly. Mine was reading incorrectly till I ran a seperate earth wire.

Think it's time for a new sender for mine. Decided to splutter and stall in the outside lane on one of Sydney's busiest freeways (M5) today . Gauge has always worked well, and was showing 1/4 tank. Surprisingly it still had fuel in the pump, but carby was dry, so I assumed it was a blocked fuel filter (next to carby).

Big thanks to the cops in the unmarked VW Golf who gave me a push, and to the incident response dudes who gave me some fuel

That's the advantage of driving the world's coolest car. Can't imagine you'd have gotten the same positive response if it was your Porshe that had broken down
