Australia's Route 66
Route 66 in the USA
It's always spoken about.
Yes, I've travelled some of it - its great fun.. if you are a car-nostalgia fan, do it!
However, there are Route 66 type highway ruins in this country too.
All make interesting pics
All in Victoria, Beaufort, Trawalla, Mortlake.

Re: Australia's Route 66
The old Hume Hihgway just out of Sydney is similar. I don't know how they drove these cars on those goat tracks.
Part of the current Hume is also turning into a sort of Route 66. I was driving through Holbrook (NSW) recently and they've nearly finished the bypass that will skip the town. Half the shops in the town had shut their doors, and the other half had For Sale signs. Quite sad.

When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Re: Australia's Route 66
I always thought about starting a thread on old servos. Especially a period shot and one taken today.
In sydney there are still plenty of old servos. Some of them are in disguise but they are there.
I would agree with peter on the hume. Used to love driving through all the towns to vic.

Re: Australia's Route 66
Yes, the Hume highway between Melbourne & Sydney was/is our busiest state highway.
If you go through the town instead of the highway bypasses, you see some choice old garages etc!
I also have pic of Morrow's Holden in Nhill, (Vic)
And check out this old version of a pre-hoist at Narrandera NSW
You just drove the car on to it. I wonder if some had dodgey brakes and went off!
This old 1960's sign on the now empty Commercial hotel in Yass would have been brightly lit up to attract weary travellers from Melbourne who have had enough driving and just want to put their heads down - An Aussie Rt 66 classic sign!

Re: Australia's Route 66
I have seen a few of those drive on hoists , there was one in Castlemaine when we were there the other month behind an antique shop out toward Chewton . That Ivan Morrow building was an absolute ripper , the floors and all the fittings looked unreal - its a shame to see these old joints falling into disrepair

Re: Australia's Route 66
I took this picture on the Midland hwy in NSW..somewhere in the middle. I can't remember where, back in June 2006.
An absolute classic Route 66 type pic. How easy would it be to make a mock-ed up movie set here? Pick your era, 50's 60's 70's

Re: Australia's Route 66
The town of Gunning NSW (near canberra) was on the Hume Highway, now it is bypassed.
Australia's Route 66 (The Hume Highway) has the luxury of having some 'living monuments' such as 'Baileys Garage' - a long time Holden dealer and still working as a garage
We stopped by their on the way home from Sawtell.
There is a pic of them in the window - being taught the ways and means of the new '48/215' Holden
Also an appreciation from Holden (Service plaque 1945-1970)
A really good place for a pic or two!
Merry Christmas all!

Re: Australia's Route 66
2 more in Beaufort Victoria, on the Western Highway to Adelaide are absolute classics. Both side by side...
The Moroccan classic 19teens era garage is amazing and the one on the right was a blacksmiths before being a garage!
The Western Highway has some absolute beaut old garges!
Roadside history!

If its the one I think you're talking about Blacky that was still in use just over a year ago. But the workshop that was leasing it moved out and in its place another bloody antique shop.....Blacky wrote:I have seen a few of those drive on hoists , there was one in Castlemaine when we were there the other month behind an antique shop out toward Chewton .
Re: Australia's Route 66
Great thread! I love vintage roadside architecture Here are some pics I've gathered over the last few years
Old mid century servo in Scone still in use today
The abandoned Oak Factry in Muswellbrook
Garage in Tumbarumba
Cafe in Wodonga
Albury main street, then and now
Civic Theatre, Scone
3 Sisters Motel in Katoomba - awesome neon!
