G'day everyone,
I am new to this forum and more importantly new to restoring cars.
What i am trying to find out is, i am looking at restoring an FB ute but since i am not experienced at doing this i am trying to find out what the common areas in an FB ute would you find rust and where abouts you have to go looking to find some in the areas you cannot see
Thanks for the help in advance
Paul.
Finding rust in FB utes
G'day Paul.
Never had an FB Ute but...............
Look at bottom lower corner of both front mudguards as well as the headlight peak and top rear of guards as well (near the windscreen)
Pull up floor vinyl/carpet if it has any and check for rust in the floor.
Check for rust in the inner and outer sill panels ( have to stick your head under the car to check the inner sill panel. Also rear lower quarter panel as well.
The spare wheel door also rusts out and are a bit hard to get in good condition and check also the spare wheel cavity.
Check both doors mainly in lower areas both outside lower door skin and door frame.
Have a good look underneath especially in floor area below the ute section.
Have a look at the front subframe and subframe legs as they rust usually.Check under ute for rust in floor structural members.
If the front guards are off also check where the subrame assembly bolts to the fiewall as this is a hidden rust area.
Check for rust in front section of bonnet and chrome front bonnet bar ( they rust from the inside out) and also the bonnet bump stops ( rubber things that the bonnet sits on when its closed)under the bonnet are also a rust area.
Have I missed anything??
I know it sounds like they are rust buckets but this gives you an idea where to look.
Hope this helps,
Terry.

I'm like FB MAD, never owned a ute but in my experience with the wagon NO place is untouched by the dreaded cancer
, my suggestion would be buy an already restored one, (not as much fun as doing one yourself but will save you shitloads of cash) IMHO,
