Anyone using a weber downdraught either a 32/36 0r a 38/38 ........what manifold ya running and what jets etc ...and how do they perform ..seen the sonic injection manifolds on ebay...link below ....Any experiences or comments ..Fingers

i had one on a red motor and can not tell you any more detail than that cause it was on it when i bought it, what i can tell you is i'de heard good things and i wasn't let down car performed well and seemed reasonable on fuel

I fitted a Weber carb from a two litre Cortina ( 32/36 Weber I think ?? ) on to my wifes ( Grumblebum's ) KE70 Toyota Corolla that she had years ago ( I'd fitted a bigger imported Jap 1500 CC engine as opposed to the 1300 CC original ) .

There was some improvement but not overly great , probably because the engine was stock and unmodified and strangled with it's jap pollution spec cam and other parts.

I'm sure if I'd cammed it up, and improved it's breathing in other places , it would have had a fairly dramatic improvement.

But the sound that came out of that Weber was incredible when it was opened up !!. It did have the old Ram Flo aircleaner so that would have helped the sound.

My workmates could hear me coming from 5 k's away when I opened it up down the straight on my way to work ( highway, late at night starting nightshifts ) ........... no shit !!

I also had a 253 in a UC Torana many years ago with a downdraught Weber ( can't remember the size ( DGAV something something ?? , but was bigger than the Cortina's Weber that's for sure ).

The engine was re-built by me using a group C racing cam ( dunno what those specs were , can't remember now either ) and had some minor engine improvements but not huge ones.

The Weber also made some improvement over the 350 Holley rubbish thing that was previously on it.

Once again, I've never heard another carb open up with a sound like that Weber.The Torana had a Finer Filter air cleaner on it so once again, that would have also helped the sound.

Liked these Weber carbs that much that I kept 'em before selling both cars they were on.

Still have 'em in my shed waiting for something to fit 'em on to.

Piss easy to work on the downdraught Webers, love 'em !!

I've never heard another brand of carb sound like a Weber!

I'm sure the two litre Cortina carb would improve the output of a standard grey and certainly a mid range worked grey.

Highly modded grey would probably benefit from a better Weber carb than the shopping trolley Weber from the Cortina.

Another thought for a 2 barrel conversion on the grey is the Torana/ Monaro 161 S/ 173 S ( yes, they did make a 173 S , but not many of them ) /186 S Stromberg carb as I'm sure a jetted down one of those would suit a grey very well and allows the use of a standard/ish looking air cleaner as well for those that like the original type look.

Thanks for the comments mate ......the motor I have to fit up with the weber is a grey with 82 grind cam .bored to 3 and 3/16,decked ,balanced , blue printed , heap of porting work and large valves and running a trimatic transmission ..I been looking at these new weber manifolds on ebay with a 32/36 or 38/38 weber and thinking how much easy to tune than twins or triples and probably more tractible with progressive linkages as standard ...not real old school but should make a hot grey run and idle a lot smoother and as you say that induction roar is cool ........Fingers

I,m thinking its gunna be easier to tune and keep tuned and also minimise the fuel consumption......thanks for the comment mate .........Fingers

Had twin downdraughts on a TE Gemini . 1800 motor bored within an inch of its life, head shaved more than Yul Brunner, 'tractors, highway cam. Damn litle suzi motor went like a scalded cat... induction noise was definitely cool.

The Carby Guru weighs in ............thanks mate .......in your opinion how do you think it will perform ....it will be just 1 carby either a 32/36 with progressive linkages or a 38/38 with 2 barells operating simultaneously ........what are your ideas Harv....

32/36 is going to flow around the 250CFM mark, a good step up from the factory 160CFM for a grey motor Strommie. The 38/38 will flow around 600CFM, and sounds a little on the big side for a grey (hot 202 maybe). My guess is that you would see sluggish performance off the line with the 38/38, a deadspot similar to triple Strommies with no venturi restrictors (I could be wrong though - just IMHO). I'm a big fan of progressive linkages rather than both barrels running together - keeps the venturi signal strong for quick acceleration, then open wide to breathe at higher revs.

Harv as usual excellent advice mate ............I am convinced the 32/36 is the way to go ....with the progressive linkage it should be very enconomical as you say .....250cfm sounds logical to me ....600cfm would be enough for a V8 mate ....I have ordered one of the Sonic Injection manifolds and am about to order a 32/36 weber jetted to suit around 2.5 litre capacity ...then suck it and see for the tuning ..It will be very easy to fit up a standard grey motor air cleaner too , so it will look as it belongs there..it will be some time before it all comes together ....but I will let you know how it runs

I am just in the process of getting a weber carby for my grey motor...bit of conflicting advice from carb suppliers as to which weber is better to use 32/38 or 4adm ie falcon. I am leaning towards 32/38.

The carb I have settled on is a 32/36 DGV Manual choke see the link below .........and see the above posts re opinions from other members ......I am waiting for the manifold from Sonic in melbourne ............Fingers

Ordered my 32/36 carby today, will be getting my manifold done this week, so hopefully this time next week it will be sorted.

What manifold are you using mate ................what other work has been done to your motor have you got a thread going in my FB section if ya havent you should start one ....I am really keen to see how it all goes ...Fingers

Manifold is going to be custom made (will post some pics when done). As for engine mods, it is a grey with extractors & a mild cam. I bought it 2nd hand so don't really have much info on specs. http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.ph ... 799.0.html
