apart from pulling it apart is there any way of testing for this

Dave,
Test 1: With the car sitting in the driveway at idle, put your foot on the brake. If the diaphragm is shot (or valves passing) the idle will change.
Test 2: Disconnect the vacuum hose to the booster, push a drift up the rubber hose and hose clamp it. Go for a drive and see if the problem goes away (note that your brakes will require a little extra pedal effort when unboosted - go careful).
Don't ask me how I know the above tests work on a VH24..... sodding booster on the FB was only reco'd 2 years ago
