VH40 booster... left side /right side mounts

Hi all...

I am about to attack the old panelvan and fit disc brakes to the HR front end .
All new bits ready to go ..
Just had a look at my recond VH40 booster and noticed that the 2 mounting studs are on the right hand side of the booster ... :?: :?: :?:
Whats the go here??
The VH44 i have on the drum brake set up has the studs on the left side of the booster so that the bracket mounts straight to the drivers side ... inner gaurd 8)

Booster has Model No:2 on it??
Do i have the wrong booster model??
Or
Do i have to make a mount that reaches right around the booster and on to the 2 studs which are on the engine side of the booster :econfused: ??
Rear of the booster ( the bit that faces the front of the car) has a single stud in the middle 8)

Cheers

I don't know enough about the topic to give good advice, but you might have it upside down?

On some boosters the brake lines go in from the top. Take a look at the picture of the booster on Hydroboost's website http://www.hydroboost.com.au/techtalk.htm

Turning it 180 degrees would obviously put the brackets on the correct side for RHS mounting.

Hi MeFB

I am almost cert the poppet valve has to face down for a VH 40 or 44 to function properly. That means that the brake line would be at the top
Probably just need to chuck it in at a brake place and get em to unbolt the centre and rotate the thing 180 deg into the booster body .
Knowing my luck it probably wont be that simple...
Or .. if i tackle it myself i will stuff it up and end up having to get a brake place to sort it anyway....

Have looked at some available at the moment on ebay and some have the 2 studs right side  and some have them left side

That sounds right from looking at the pictures. My VH24 sits the other way up with the lines going into the bottom.

Good luck

Yo....
Managed to get the stub axles with new rotors, caliper pistons and seals. pads, wheel bearings etc bolted into the van today.
Ran a mate from the local brake specialists.. he came over and we swapped the guts of the VH40 .. 180 degrees .. all good .
He reckons it had been set up for a pommy car which in a lot of cases have the boosters mounted over on the left side.

Didnt think pommy stuff ran anything as big as a VH40.... thought the 24s or the 44s would have been the go on smaller drum brakes.

While i had the front end apart i took a full turn of the coils of the heavy duty kings springs .
Also fitted 2"lowering blocks back into the rear end ..
'
Hope to get some shed time tomorrow and bolt the Booster in as well as fitting the new rear wheel cylinders and brake shoes ..bleed the brakes. etc.

I have 2 standard HR rims for the front .. would have liked something wider .. will just have to watch ebay or shop hard at a swap meet for something suitable..... spose with lowered springs .. the narrower the better to avoid scrubbing tyres on guards etc.

They ( HR) have got the single 1/8th hole drilled in them and the centres are welded 3/16"in from the rear inner edge of the rim to give clearance for the caliper.
I was under the impression that all HR rims are set up this way..
Seems it would have been easier back then for Holden to make all HR rims with the "disc brake "offset.
That way all HRs would have had the same front wheel track????

HD rims look the same with the same "bumps "between the 5 holes but are welded flush with the rear inner edge of the rim
Yes/No.
All earlier rims have a Vee shape between the holes . HD and HR have a squarer shape to that wedge shape.
some early 13s had centres rivetted to the outers.

you've got the disc brake rim thing sussed :ewink: i just knew the hole thing to identify they are different, but i'm pretty sure they had the 2 types on HR's disc brake cars set of 5 DB wheels, if it were a drum brake car 5 standard wheels, based on the relative dificulty finding disc brake rims i don't think all HR's had them
maybe one of the gurus can verify

I have found 3 type's of rims for HD-HR's
The standard drum brake rims
the disc brake rims
And the very late HR's had rims that will fit both drum and disc

Nup.. I need to stay away from computers when i get on the piss over xmas..
Hr rim centres are welded flush with the inner edge of the rim. that pushes the outer part of the rim outwards 3/16th of an inch further than HD rims and gives clearance for the disc caliper.

Here is a HR disc rim...

Here is an aftermarket ROH rim that will fit..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270530.jpg

Also found this website handy for sorting out what early Holden brake drum dimensions are etc..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270530.jpg

It mentions EH /EJ sedan and wagons have the widest brake drum "swept area" of any early Holden... 54mm. worth thinking about when doing a drum brake upgrade on your old clunker..
I removed the rear shoess / cylinders and drums off the pano and measured the shoes...54mm .
i measured the new Shoes .. R1132..to suit the rear end when running a HR disc front end
They are only 45mm wide
Thats the EH shoes on the left..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270527.jpg

Sorta makes ya wander why GMH didnt stick with the EH stoppers on the rears of thier HRs.. ??
Booster in place.. bit bigger than the old VH44..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270528.jpg
Discs hangin in place waitin for the HR front rims..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270529.jpg
I took half a turn off the King springs in the front before i put em back in.. wont know if thats enough or not until i get the wheels back on the front??

Got the missus to do the pumpin ... bled the brakes and they came up great...

Stuck 2 inch blocks in the back while i had things apart...

Sittin where i like it now..
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270534.jpg

Will have a look at it once the fronts go on.... Might have to bite another half a turn off the front to get it lookin right...http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 270533.jpg

Cheers fa now..
