The drum brakes on my wagon are staying on full lock after they heat up. Yestreday had my foot on the brake whilst double parked for around five minutes went to take off and it would not budge I had to wait an hour for them to cool down and unlock themselves. The front hubcaps where so hot I could not even touch them.

Had the same prob a few months back my mechanic changed the brake shoes and made a few adjusments and it had been sweet. Any ideas of what the cause is

Adjusters in wrong way around and / or winding themselves out after each application??.
Shoes on wrong way around.. leading shoe at the back instead of the front..etc.????
Brake master missing restrictor valve..... ooops thats for disc front only.????
Wheel cylinders with corrosion in em preventing the cups from sliding back after appiication.????

Out of round brake drums....

Are you using a booster or is it ths standard set-up? Is it all wheels, just one or fronts / backs etc?

If it's all wheels, then it really has to be the master cylinder.

If it's just one wheel, then it could be quite a few things like Reddo said.

How old are your flexible hoses ? If they are the originals they could have swollen internally which will let the fluid through with pedal pressure but wont return properly.

Which would help explain the hubcaps/rims being hot. Apply once, really slow to return creating excessive heat. But if the hoses are fine it could also be the shoes have been adjusted too much. It's a nice list to work through....

I guess the question comes back to how many / which wheels are affected

I dunno, but if all of your wheels started playing up at the same time, then I'd have to say the culprit is a component that can affect all of the wheels at once? On the standard (non boosted) FB/EK set-up that's really only the fluid, the master cylinder, the brake line down to the first splitter under the driver's side floor, and I guess the brake pedal assembly (as silly as that sounds).

If it's just fronts or just backs, or a combination, then the adventure begins.....

By the way - I know exactly 'dick' about brakes, I'm just sharing my thoughts.

Hmmm...did you refill using DOT 5 fluid?

If you did, and you haven't changed over to compatible rubber components, then they can expand. Sometimes the seal in the master cylinder can expand and cause problems letting the fluid return to release the brakes.

If this is the case, then there's a job of work ahead of you as the DOT 5 fluid could have damaged some more of the rubber parts in the system.

Its running a PBR booster which in original. Im pretty sure its only the front that r doing it but ill double check before trying to fix it.

The old dude I bought it off worked at a brake and clutch place. He gave me all his spares so I have at least 5 of everything just not him

Yeah, it would be handy if he was there to sort it out
