NSW Number Plates

I bought an EK ute ages ago from Leeton in NSW (and then drove it back to WA, but that's another story).
Anyway, the ute had NSW plates
61 EK UTE.
I still have the plates because I had to change them to WA ones.
Are these plates still able to be used by someone in NSW? I'm guessing that the plates couldn't be re-issued without these one's being returned.

I know in Vic if you see a car that is unreg (for a certain amount of time, I would think 2 years) but has plates that you like you can apply to get those plates for your car.
I met a bloke that did it for his EK, mind you they were not a custom plate they were an original early plate.

They'd be pretty useless in NSW.........there's too many digits
If plates are stolen or go missing, I think they are put out of circulation for 5 years before they can be re issued.

I'm with Cal. Never seen anything other than 6 digit plates in NSW.
You sure the number is right. You can check on
www.myplates.com.au.
cheers

Im with Mick,Ive got heaps of plates hanging on my shed wall that havent been on a car in 20 years,none of them are available .
I have heard otherwise from heaps of people,but its always "My mate.........bla bla bla"
If it is possible to reuse old plates without having to hand them in,re-apply for them and be reissued new ones,then I would like to know the details.

Under certain circumstances the RTA, together with the Police, may consider the reissue of your character content, and the restoration of your previous fee structure, of your lost or stolen plates. A minimum of 6 months must have passed from the plates being reported as lost or stolen before this review. You can address this request for reissue together with any supporting documentation to:

I also have a set of NSW plates I won't be using.

If anyone is interested please let me know...

The details on what you can and cant do are here. The RTA is far from perfect, but they generally do a good job of having information on their website.
https://www.myplates.com.au/design_a_pl ... terms.html
I've tried to pull out the relevant bits people are asking about.
3.3 Your SNP Rights
D. You will lose your SNP Rights if any of the following occur, provided that the RTA will allow you a grace period of 3 months before your SNP Rights are lost in the scenarios in paragraphs (iv) – (vii):
i. The RTA recalls Your Special Number Plates;
ii. The registration of the vehicle to which Your Special Number Plates have been allocated is cancelled due to expiry of registration;
iiii. You transfer your SNP Rights in accordance with these Terms and Conditions;
iv. You surrender Your Special Number Plates to the RTA (or equivalent vehicle registration authority in another Australian state or territory);
v. The registration of the vehicle to which Your Special Number Plates have been allocated is cancelled for reasons other than expiry of registration;
vi. You register the vehicle for which Your Special Number Plates have been allocated in another state or territory; or
vii. Where Your Special Number Plates are kept in storage with the RTA and you fail to renew the storage
E. If you lose your SNP Rights but wish to have identical Special Number Plates allocated to your registered vehicle, then you must place a new order for them. The RTA cannot guarantee that identical plates will be available to re-order.
3.4 Transfer and Exchange of Special Number Plates
a. Your Special Number Plates always remain the property of the RTA and other than as set out in paragraph 3.4 (b) or (c) below, you cannot transfer your SNP Rights or Your Special Number Plates.
b. Your Special Number Plates always remain the property of the RTA and generally are not freely transferable. However, the RTA may allow you to transfer your SNP Rights to another Individual or Organisation, or exchange them with another vehicle registered in your name, in accordance with the RTA's transfer and exchange policy and on payment of the applicable transfer fees.
c. Upon the transfer of Your Special Number Plates, you will lose all your SNP Rights to those Special Number Plates.
