vehicle build date?

I've noticed Steve Jackson posting in the ID plate section when some FBs and EK were built, how do you tell when the cars were built is it something in the numbers?
It has to do with the cars around it (in number terms) having a known selling date (from the owners manual or other documents) or having date coded items on them, also early FB's with nitro paint are all built in early 1960.
The more cars are recorded the better the dating gets.
