Chrome plating exterior door handles

Hi everyone,
Can someone confirm that the buttons on exterior door handles need to be removed prior to chrome plating. That also goes for the barrel lock in the exterior tailgate handle.
I'm assuming they do...

Yes - I had to remove mine before they were done.

thanks Blacky.
Next question...how do you remove the button? EK shop manual shows a spring retainer holding everything in. In the pic below I've got a red arrow pointing to what I think is the spring retainer - nice n rusty. How to I get that out without stuffing it?
Next question...how do I remove the barrel from the rear tailgate handle? There is a square 'lug' to the right of the handle. Does that have to come out...
Help!

Yes that is the retaining clip that you need to get out, i soaked mine in WD40 then used a thin bladed screwdriver to lever it out but note that where your arrow is pointiing the metal is very thin in that indentation and will most likley break if you lever from there

Thanks for the tip Robin. I'll de-rust it and use the WD40 too before trying to remove the retainer.\
Anyone got any ideas on removing the barrel for the tailgate handle?

OK at the last NSW Club meeting we had a bit of show n tell for handles...so armed with a list of tips from Jim, Steve, Peter, Lou...I was ready...
Tail Gate Handle
Locate the pin at the end of the handle....can't see it?...either could I...
Using a small punch or nail gently tap out the pin.
This will release the barrel which you can pull out. Pull out the ‘thingymagig’ at the other end that locks the handle.
Bag n tag your bits and off to the platers…

Door Handles...
Some of my handles were badly rusted in. I had them soaking in WD-40 for a week. Penetrol would work well too. Make sure you get some support under the handle and make sure you wrap the handle in rag to protect it. Not shown in the pics as I wanted them pretty...
You might be able to push the retainer in with a screwdriver. If its rusted in like mine was use a suitable size socket gently tap the outside edge of the socket to push in retainer a couple of mils or enough to get get a screwdriver under the clip.
Using a fine edge screwdriver start to very carefully and slowly prise the clip out. Work your way around the clip.
You might now be able to push the button through Or if rusted in like mine use a suitable size socket to gently tap the button of the door handle through the handle. Wrap the socket in rag or make a ‘pad’ so you don’t damage the button.
There you have it.
All the 'bits'...also notice the O ring on the actual door button.
Bag n tag and then off to the platers…

After seeing the handles at the club meeting and then looking
At mine at home I thought (to hard basket)
But now it looks possible. Yaa team Stewart!
What is your plans to replace the ring clips with?
Cheers

Hi Wayne,
Definitely doable. All four done in about 40 minutes or so. First one was the hardest. The other three straight forward once you know what you're doing.
I'll derust the clips, paint them and put them back in. I might have to get some new O rings as they were badly perished and maybe replace a couple of springs as they were badly rusted.

Thanks for the DIY step by step instructions! I have my door handles in the box to be chromed but wasn't told they needed to be disassembled! Guess I'll have to try now, if I need any help, I know who to ask!
