Has anyone had any issues about putting the Atlas White wall inserts on new tyres.
I have been told its not recommended but given no explanation why.
So, just wondering if anyone else has put them on new tyres and had problems.

Apparently the bite into the sidewall of the tyre. Some insurance companies don't approve of them either

Ive heard the stories about them, but I'm just wanting to know about putting them onto NEW tyres.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think there's any difference to putting them on new or used tyres

I've run them for the last 15 years. They wear a groove in the sidewall, but only a bit. I sand the back edge smooth before putting them on. They last years if looked after. I used to make sure I have tyre shine/ lube behind them so they sat ok on the tyre.

The old tyre/new tyre issue is to do with oils leaching out of the new tyres and discolouring the whitewalls so some sellers say,they say the older tyres have leached most of the oils out.

Thanks Oz, thats what I was told but had never heard it before. Was just wanting to know if anyone had troubles like this or not. Might just do it anyways, they aint gonna go yellow overnight........ are they ???

I think that only happens when you have whitwalls applied to a tyre, as in they wear a groove into the tyre then paint the whitewall on. I don't see how it will happen with flappers.

I've had my whitewalls for over 2 years now, and there's no discolouring, apart from dirt

Best to run tubes if you run the inserts too.....hard cornering can make them move a little and lose a little pressure.

OK, got my Atlas Inserts and really happy with the way they came out.
Took it out on the weekend just gone and noticed they are wearing a groove into the sidewall. I know that they are prone to doing this, but its a fair groove. I always check my tyre pressure and have never had a prob there.
I have only driven it about 20 times since they were fitted, so I'm not to happy about it. They have pretty much $*#@ the walls of my tyres.
Contacted where I got them form and the reakon they have never heard of them doing this which I reakon is bull*hit.
Just wanna know if anyone else has had the same probs in such a short amount of time.

Had them on 2 cars with no real problems. They just kind of 'polished' up the sidewalls, but didn't wear a groove.

I know different tyres have different hardness compounds that give them their grip v's wear characteristics. I'm not sure if the same compound is used right throughout the tyre, but if it is, then it would make sense that a soft compound tyre's sidewalls would be more affected by the flappers. The age of the tyre would also affect the hardness of the sidewall.

I've run them and had issues, a lot depends on the profile of the tyre and your right the supplier is giving you B/S about never heard of it before. Plenty are happy to run them but I'd never touch them again even if they were free.

Alan they are Maxxis, 185/80/r13.
I'm with you Mick, dont think I will get them again, just not sure what to do with the ones on it now.
Surely it cant be good for the tyre and going away to Mt Gambier in 4 weeks doesnt leave me feeling too confident about them. Its rubbed down to the white of the tyre, so now I have the white wall and then a white scuff/groove around the insert, looks sh*t !!!

Sadly Dave its what flappers do! Does sound like you're tyre sidewall is a softish rubber though. Depending how deep its grooved the sidewall you should be fine, although it will have decreased the speed rating of the tyre. Not that that'd be an issue for you Dave

Remember alot of the redwall/whitewall tyres you see on crapadores are all cut in a millimetre or so. John's cruise night is tomorrow night if you wanna bring it out in the cold and we can have a look and see how bad it is.

The MAXXIS 80 profile MA-1's have a '420' Treadwear Grade, and a 'B' Traction Grade, which indicates a quite a hard-compound tyre. I would have thought they would be less likely to be damaged by the flappers

Maybe it's the harder compound tyres that get more affected

You probably know Maxxis do the 185/80/R13 MA-1 in a whitewall, but it's a thin band.
