HR drum front change to disk's

Hi :)
wanting to know whats needed to change a hr ball joint drum front end to
to disk brake do i just need calipers and rotors or do i need
other stub axles aswell . any info is good :thumbsup:

stubs, discs, callipers remember if you use HR, LC/J or H/KTG withe the steel pipe from the calliper to the rubber hose to get the little bracket where they join it's very imortant you can buy conversion kits that use the drum brake stubs but i think it's cheaper just to get disc brake stubs

I owned an HR Premier X2 in original condition and it had drums all round. I was using it everyday and decided to convert the front to the disc option.

I used complete stub axles from the wreckers, I think the brake hoses were different too, so you will probably need to change them as well. I also had to buy a new master cylinder - they are different and a vacuum brake booster( PBR VH40 from memory) with the appropriate bracket to fit your car. You will need to have an inlet manifold fitted that has the fitting for the vacuum hose to the booster (which my HR did not have) My HR still had the original 186K X2 prefix block and twin stromberg manifold and I had to get a fitting welded in.

It was also necessary for me to replace the rear wheel slave cylinders - they are different to vehicles with all round drums, and the shoes themselves - also different to vehicle with all round drums. I was young and stupid when I did the conversion and I didn't know about the rear brakes, so when I thought it was all OK, the rear brakes would lock up even on light brake applications.

yeah but it's the same as the clutch and all the differance is a cup looking thing with holes in it that you leave out for disc brakes or clutch

EK Jay,

Yes there is a disc brake master, the difference is a valve that is in the drum brake master to allow the drum shoes to return to there position slowly after the pedal is released. Not sure what that achieves but if you take the valve out it then becomes a instant disc brake master. From memory the bore size is the same. Thats what Mick was pointing at.

Have heard that if you use a "proportioning valve"in the brake pipe that feeds the rear cylinders you dont have to use the smaller diameter rear wheel cylinders.
Also .. the rear brake shoes that you use with a disc brake front are different than if you are using 4 wheel drum brakes.
Again.. not required if you fit the proportioning valve.
Been told these valves are fitted on HQs etc just uner the sill below the drivers side seat in the brake line.
Apparently it gives you about 60% brake effort to the fronts and 40% to the rears reducing the chances of a rear end lock up.

all the rear brake parts aren't dear i just done it new shoes and wheel cylinders $66, you might get the proportioning valve cheap or free but then you have to cut yor rear brake line get fittings and a flairing tool to fit the valve, not that it's not good advice reddo :ewink:

Ya can buy all the rear drum bits on ebay.
Fa $66 ya wouldnt root around with prop valves etc.... Just another spot for something to stuff up.

jay, you could go with a nissan 1 inch master like i have in mine. just take the residual valve out for the front cylinder for disks. then you'll have dual circuit too.

just thought about something here :oops: the above applies only IF you have an EJ,EH,HD,HR etc diff housing and brakes

dual circuit brakes are a good idea also :thumbsup:
