Stinky's EK Ute

I've started, the car is currently being stripped of all it's paint and rust, it should be back in the shed in etch primer in the next couple of weeks.

Plans are for a "cheap and cheerful" build with the emphasis on cheap, hopefully I have enough parts around the place to avoid any major purchases aside from wiring, paint and rubbers. Still tossing up colour and style, but there's a long way to go before I have to commit anyway
Plans include doing all the work myself (the interior might be tricky though  ), slot in a Red 6 and HR front end and get it low.

The story so far.

In it's "hey-day"

With one of it's previous owners

Arrival at my place

Stripped down to be loaded up for the trip to the paint stripper. Note the "industry standard" method of diff removal
Image

Not dodgey at all if you put enough rachet straps on
Image

Stripped, yet to be de-rusted
Image

Is this the proper way to "smooth" the rear panel?
Image

It's been cut 'n' shut at some stage, welded through the A pillars and the floor
Image

Some "leftovers" from Thommo's Panelvan project should help with all the rust repairs.

nice one Stinky...

Love the box trailer transport and hey day shots

How did you strip the paint?

I used a bit of Marks spare wagon roof to fill the spare wheel door on the trailer I did recently.

Cheers

Ed

The paint was stripped by Minus Paint, I earned a few favours with the owner who has sold the business so he told me to get a car down there if I wanted to redeem. The ute was my only car closest to being fully stripped for the process so it won the lottery. The whole car goes into a tank of alkaline solution that eats the paint, bog etc and then it is pressure washed. Not sure what they use to de-rust but they end up with shiny metal then etch it.
Thanks for the tip on the spare wheel door, looking at what's left I think keeping it closed will be the best option.

No, I couldn't, it never gets washed, I carry 4 kids to school with it, 3 days a week it is parked in a public carpark all day, weekends it does duty as the kid's sports delivery vehicle often on dirt roads with 100kms + round trips. Cost peanuts to buy, cheap to run (on gas) and I don't have to worry too much about it getting damaged.
It's perfect

I got the shell back the other day, some surprises but nothing serious. For a car that made a magazine feature the "panel work" is a shocker, simple dents that even I would knock out had been bogged up

Image

A few dents along the edge
Image

This dent in the top edge was full of bog as was the rest of the top edges.
Image

Driver's door is a teabag, Passenger side is OK though
Image

Tempting to leave it black primer and run these wheels, but no, something different planned.
Image

Usual stuff
Image

Tailgate skin is in good condition bar this little bit of rust
Image

Can't say the same about the inner though
