hey guys has any used or using porta walls on their tyres, they are the pretend whitewalls that sit under the edge of the rim against the tyre for those that havent seen them. and if u have used them what are they like im getting mixed reports

well, I had a set on the Fj, and found that they cut a groove into the sidewall of the radial tyres, and IF you use the car as a daily or regular diver do not get them, the disintergrate!
if the car has crossply tyres or is only used every now and then, they may be OK
(just my experience, I am not a tyre experts)

Sound OK to me, going to try some soon on an ek ute. The main thing is how much work you put into fitting them, make sure the tyre is super clean and you really 'seat' them well. Who are you getting them off?? I think the Atlas brand are the best...antique tyres have them on ebay.

as with earlyholdenfan they cut into the sidewall on radial tyres and do come apart, crack, split, fall apart i am speaking from experiance. have you considered the cut in and painted ones i've had them and there quite good

i think i might have to buy the real thing geez its hard to build a nice car on a budget , do u think my wife really needs me to build her that two story house.

John from Johns Rod and Custom has been playing around with some different compounds to get them to last better and stay white. Not sure of the results as they have'nt been tested for that long (maybe a year so far).

Personally I steer clear of anything that cuts into the sidewall of your tyre, port-a-walls will do this. They are also known as flappers which if not seaed right you'll quickly find out why. Burnouts or powerslides are a big no go, easily the quickest way to destroy them! They also squeak....

If you want a budget whitewall AND have to buy tyres. Look for Hankooks, Nankangs, Jetsons, you may get lucky and find 13" ones but I know 14"s are anywhere from $95 to $115 fitted with a one inch whitewall....

Nah a Canberian I know has a big block Buick and he destroyed his port-a-walls at Easter last year sliding around the corner at the end of the main straight at Calder Park.....

Get the atlas ones from Antique Tyres.......cut off the inner most strip of rubber, carefully insert them on and always sand the outer edge so it's not sharp and thay won't cut up your tyres too much.....I corner hard and have done circle work in paddocks with mine.....they only die when i hit kurbs parking, after the first two sets I don't do that anymore....current set been on 2 years and still pretty perfect.....

Oh and make sure you have tubes in your tyres......cos hard cornering can let air out without tubes.

Why do you have to cut the inner strip out?? Going to get some soon but need to get a RWC first probably.

They seemed to be extraordinarily hard to fit on with the first 5mm or so of rubber left on, by my second set I shaved off the first inner 5mm and they were easier to fit ......and didn't come off so i'm happy.

They are some seriously good tips, I also like the factthey don't cut into the tyre. Sounds like atlas are the go!

Once you smooth off the outer edges they still cut in a tiny bit, maybe 3mm or so into the tyre but then they don't get any worse. Oh and forgot...I use tyre foam spray that keeps the tyres clean and shiney, that keeps them lubricated! So they don't rub.
