I am in the late stages of completing a rebuild on a 1960 F.B.and I have a dilemma.
The I.D. number that is stamped on the inner front gard when you lift the bonnet (mine is very faded)
VIN.? number is it the same as the ally body (tag)ID that is in the engine bay eg Body F.B.123-10980
Trim----- Paint ---insert-----top --- the department of transport need to know the body chassis number.
The man at the dept of trans is helpful would members mind giving a comment please.

Hi there TDB, the chassis number on the inner Drivers side Guard should be different to the number on the ID (Alloy) tag on the firewall. Unless there is a new replacement front end on your car, which were usually blank.

This confusion pops up often.

The 'VIN/Chassis' number that the Dept. of Transport requires is the one stamped into the chassis or body. In the illustrated case, EK57209S is the number they require. This number is unique to that car.

The 'Body Number' on the Body ID plate is for GM-H internal use only. The EK2016-8998S body number means that this car was the 8998th EK ute to be made at the Sydney plant. This is a very high number for a Ute, as the EJ Paint number illustrates. This is not the only EK to have the body number 8998. There will also be an EK225-8998S & an EK229-8998S etc. etc. In fact there will be a 8998 of each body style & model. The possible exception could be the EK2104 (Panel Van), because they did make that many.

The RTA (or VicRoads etc.) have no interest in the numbers on your Body ID plate, they only need the chassis number & engine number to identify a car. This plate can go missing & have no effect on rego.

I have been speaking to an officer of the law recently - even though the identification tags arent used for licencing purposes its still fraudulent to modify them to make the car appear to be something that its not.

Correct, but I believe this would be a civil matter & not the concern of the RTA or the Police.

It would be similar to a licensed motor dealer selling a fake XU-1. The buyer would go thru the Dept. of Fair Trading (Consumer Affairs etc.) for compensation or refund. If proved, criminal charges could be laid, but this is very rare.

it kinda shows the importance (or lack of importance) that the ID tag has as far as rego authorities are concerned when they don't even need to be there on a car that's about pre 1970 when ADR's started
