I'm typing this kicking back after a weekend long carving workshop with Mr Tiki Beat himself - Marcus Thorne! If you've had the opportunity to participate in one of these workshops and didn't, kick yourself now - and HARD. Marcus is a great teacher and such a down to earth and humble bloke, and it was a pleasure hanging with him and a bunch of other fine folk all weekend talking tiki art and carving

Everyone got a pre-marked out log, ready to carve.


As part of the package everyone gets a basic toolkit to start carving too - awesome!


"See its easy, just hit the pointy steel thing into the wood thing with the other wood thing and within seconds you'll have a 6 foot tiki"

This is how mine finished up after 2 days of carving. Basically she just needs some minor finishing up, sanding and lacquer.

So, did anyone cut their dick off? Some of the angles those chisels are pointing I wouldn't be surprised .

what sort of timber is normally used? looks like those treated pine logs they use for fences. Some very dangerous looking methods of holding the work piece (between the legs) could be very painful

No injuries to report of. Marcus strongly reccomends using a worktable where you can clamp down your piece, but thats obviously difficult to organise when you're doing something like this interstate.

The timber used was pine. Usually its okay, but this had obviously been sitting a while because it was very dry and light. Redgum is tops for carving but again hard to organise for something like this.

Yeah, there'd be a few tears flowing if this one missed the wood

Hey Hewey..why not carve a small one for a gear knob on the car??
Just use a bench vice this time!

That's awesome Hewey, i'm am so jealous and trust me i did kick myself hard when i realised i'd missed his Melbourne workshop.
Any pics of the finished piece?

Here's my gear shift knob tiki, i used a small chisel then finished it off with a dremel. Not the best but its early days yet..
