Ladies and Gents,

After my last little foray into Warmaride heaters (http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... 29&t=12061 ), I'm keen to do a similar document for the Trico vacuum washers that were a NASCO option for FB/EKs. Note that I don't want to go anywhere near vacuum wipers this time... just the washers .

I would propose a similar process to what I did with the Warmarides:
collate the literature and give some of the background history on the washers,
give the technical background on how the washers work,
pull the washers apart, take lots of photos and write up a removal/overhaul/installation process,
put together some info on where replacement parts can be obtained from, and
Post it here on the forum for anyone to use as they need to.

The things I have at the moment:
a set of vacuum washers (thanks Tim!) - bottle, cradle, pump, escutcheons, nozzles and switch,
an FB sedan to mount them on .
an FX-HR Masterparts cattledog, and an FB-only Masterparts cattledog,
the FB and EK Workshop manuals,
a great technical writeup from Laurie Scott,
some contacts for replacement parts, and
some pictures of a washer installed in Tim's SuperNasco Cameo Beige sedan (http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... 11&t=12221).

If you have any of the following, I'd love to get hold of it (post it here, PM it, email it, happy to postage and photocopy fees):
Scans (or photocopies) of Accelerator magazines where the washers were advertised,
Scans (or photocopies) of the Installation instructions (these are on the FE/FC forum, but I can't get access as I am not an FE/FC Club member),
Photos of washers and parts, either installed or not (I'm especially curious to see how they were mounted/plumbed if a brake booster was installed), and
Anecdotes from anyone whos pulled a set apart (wonder if anyone has tried replacing a blown diaphragm... or screwed the dip pipe out of the vacuum canister?).

Finally, if you have a washer pump that is shagged (e.g. blown diaphragm), please let me know as I would love to get hold of one for dissassembly purposes (happy to pay).

I'm still very much in "learning" mode, but from what I can see there were probably a few genuine options:
a) a "foot pedal" operated pump that goes on the floor (I guess this is a piston-type positive displacement pump),
b) a vacuum pump that looks like a distributor vacuum advance canister, which mounted on a tid lid. The lid screwed onto a jar that was held in a steel frame on the inner guard.

I've also seen "hanging plastic bag" types, and electric types... sorting out which ones are period, which ones are NASCO and which ones are not so original is going to be part of the fun!

The FE/FC boys came up with the FC instructions for me (thanks guys!), for both the vacuum and foot type. I'll tidy them up and include them (this document will probably end up being FE/FC/FB/EK, a bit like the Warmaride one.

I have an NOS footpump setup Harv so any "how-to" documents on installation would be much appreciated. Where exactly the footpump is located on the floor would of most interest.

Now that I'm beginning to dig, it's getting even more interesting:
• FE and FC Holdens were offered with vacuum or foot operated washers.
• FB and EK Holdens were offered with vacuum, foot operated or electric washers.
• EJ and EH Holdens were offered with foot operated or electric washers, marking the demise of the vacuum washer.
• HD and HR Holdens were offered with electric demand type washers or electric automatic type washers, marking the demise of the foot operated washer.

Can't say I've ever seen electric washers on an FB/EK... I've got some chatting to do with Smooth though, and I'm hoping he has seen them before

AFAIK - FB/EK electric washers had their own nozzle, different from the FB "pivot arm spacer" ones and EK "hole in the bonnet" ones.

Think I have a replacement supplier for the FB nozzles (will try to put the rumour that pommy car nozzles fit to rest one way or another).

Still badly need any photos or Accelerator scans that anyone may have (pretty please ).

Another bump for this week.

Three weeks and no info... I can't be the only bugger that has info on Nasco washers. Starting to wonder if I offended someone like Starshine Fairysprinkle .

Stygian - please PM me your email address and I will email you the FE/FC fitting instructions for the footpump washers... looks like it may be a while before I can get enough info together to publish a complete document on washers , and no sense in your waiting for it. I've tidied up the instructions so that they are easier to read (removed a lot of the coffee cup marks and creases that come with age), and can also send you a typed set of the words on the sheet (easier to read than the old typewriter font).

Point taken on the length of the document. When I put the Warmaride one together, I ended up having to talk to a lot of the FE/FC and EJ/EH guys. They were great to work with , and I found that a lot of the info is common. I guess I felt I should keep their info in given the help I got. I'll try to cut the washer one down to size.

The reference to electric washers on EK's came from the 20-year (FX-HR) Master Parts Cattledog,which lists the following:

This would infer that the EJ electric washer motor and pumps were also offered on FB's and EKs but with a dedicated FB/EK switch/lead and nozzle (assume it was an EK bonnet type as the EK's wouldn't have had the drilled/tapped windscreen washer pivot arm spacers). It's just one reference though - a lot of the stuff I have seen in different GMH and NASCO brochures can conflict (especially the line drawings)... part of the fun for me is trying to decipher the history (as an anecdote, the early FEs used the FJ washers before NASCO released the proper FE ones...ooops... getting sidetracked on other Holdens again!). I'd love to hear from anyone who has seen an EK with (original) electric washers... I was hoping Smooth might help out but so far he has been silent too.
