Hi all,

I have picked up my FB and she's a good runner, however the water pump leaks like a sieve. Now I have a new seal but the bearing appears to have a tiny bit of play in it, however it runs quietly. If there is any play do I need to source a new one or would it be OK since it's not noisy? I just wanted to know prior to getting the old seal pressed out and replaced.

Ta

Peter

Hi Peter.Usually when a water pump has a new seal/bearing pressed in they won't have much if any play.A little bit of play may be ok but I'd be hesitant to use if it had any play that would move the end of the fan blades more than say 1/16 th inch. There are brand new water pump assemblies available from Rare Spares from memory around the $150 mark but there is at times some on evilbay selling around the $120 mark or so.Years ago most workshops would reco an old water pump as there wasn't much after market pumps made but nowdays its usually cheaper to buy a new one rather than paying a workshop to reco one for you (unless you can do it yourself and save the labour workshop cost)
I don't think you could buy a water pump reco kit for most modern makes of cars that arn't any older than say 30 years.
If it was me I'd go and buy a new pump and save the hassles.

Terry.

Thanks Terry, I have a new seal so was hoping to use it! I think the bearing play would be OK, worth a try anyway as I can get access to a press.

Cheers
