Early on saturday morning the weekend after black saturday, two mexicans stole away over the border with reckless intent.
The air was thick with smoke from the fires that raged on the not to distant southern hills, but our attention was focused on getting out of the border town. A quick fuel up later; the confined city roads opened up into vast rolling country side split in two by the blacktop single carriage way that meandered off into the distance. With only a dozen miles under our belt we entered the dreaded construction zone that would force us to slow the numbers rolling over on the odometer for over 150ks.
The sun had finally made its appearance and shone over my right shoulder as we consumed mile after mile. Fuel was taken in at Yass, both men and machinery appreciated the quick break ond fluids top up, but we had to push on.
By 12 noon we were passing goulburn and a phone call was made, "...yeah g'day mate, no problems" came the reply on the other end of the line as our imminent arrival was told.
The anticipation was at fever pitch as we made the colo vale exit off the hume hwy; we would reach our distination in only a minute or two.
"Wow. It looks heaps better than in the photo's" the turquoise paint was deep and wet looking. The owner was sat on his door step, one leg stretched out and the other bunched under his chin, admiring his car for possibly the last time. Pleasantries were again exchanged and we set about the car to reveal its potential. The hail damaged roof coupled a fairly average paint job, it looked like a white orange; some rust in the sills and a couple of other spots here and there around the back. Floors were good, it had new rubbers, tyres and a sweet interior albeit shod with marine carpet. There was a blue 202 mated to an aussie 4 speed and a hadfield chassis kit. The odometer revealed 10,000 miles since the resto and general roadworthiness was in excellent order. A quick consultation with my fellow mexican resulted in a PMI favourable way too many positives to pass up. The asking price was paid and papers signed.
I couldnt wipe the grin off my face driving along Remembrance Dr, Yerrinbool, and, as a pulled left on the steering wheel to get back on the Hume time, for a moment seemed to slow to a couple of frames a second. Out of the corner of my left eye i spotted a rosella flying at speed on a heading that would cross my path. "Its going to pull up" i thought to myself...
