NSW crew,
Coming from the south, do you avoid Sydney and bypass it, if so which is teh preferred way?
OR is the cumberland, smithfield, pennant hills roads link up to the newcastle freeway allright off peak time?
Taking into account the good ole gret motored wonders?
cheers
Paul

Off peak is getting smaller and smaller nowadays. During the day you only have about a 3 hour window
If you take the M7/M2/Pennant Hils road route it shouldnt be too bad. It'll cost ya dearly though

i'de say cal's pretty right i think there'de be quite a bit of mucking around and prolly end up quite a bit further to avoid it i reckon the only downfall is as cal said financial

You could always miss Sydney all together and go up the guts to Glenn Innes and down the hill from there.

Hi Paul
Speaking as a Sydneysider. Ditto what Cal said...if you were able to drive through b/w say 10am and 2pm you should be OK. I think if there was a reasonable country road alternative as suggested above (Tim's suggestion is a good one) I'd take it. The motorways are boring and will cost you $s. If you do come through Dorrigo and Bellingen there is some incredible scenery just make sure you have good brakes or stick it in low.
The other thing to factor in is accomodation and once you get through Sydney you have another 2ish hours before you hit Newcastle/Raymond Terrace. Others on the Forum may know better than me but the accomodation options between Sydney and Newcastle/Raymond Terrace may be limited? You'll have to go a bit of the highway.

there's central coast gosford etc for accom even once up to newy you gotta get a bit off the hwy to get to accom i think it's a fair way up before there's accom on or near the hwy
highway's good for getting to somewhere

not so good if you want to stop along the way

Thanks guys,
My big 59 desoto sailed through the mess of modern crap years ago easily by using the pennant hills way off peak with no real dramas.
In 06 i got stuck heading north through Sydney on a Friday arvo, that was crap, but no worse than Melb or Brisbane at peak hour
Cheers
