MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
Hi guys, with the new rules coming in, was wondering whats the diff between modified production & individually constructed vehicles. Does ICV have more probs, or are they both just different categories, with ICV costing more? Thing is that we've got an fc station sedan in tha shed, hr front end, full chassis, 186 trimatic etc. Looken to 350 & powerglide it in tha future. So what should we do? rego now or latter. Any & all comeback appreaciated......p.s still worken on our fb ute ''pop'', with tha flow line flash...............pps. im not speed en...im just practicing.......................
Re: MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
MPV is kinda mild mods when you say chassis do you mean hadfield type set up or a seperate fabricated rolling chassis, if it's just a hadfield type setup what you have would be an MPV and up to (not sure on limit for FC) say 330ci V8 (FB/EK limmit), yor 350 or if it's a seperate fabricated rolling chassis would be to big for MPV but could be done as ICV but with ICV the car must then pass most current ADR's (australian design rules) air bags etc
funny for all the who har about these so called changes i spoke to my engineer on friday and he said he knows nothing about any changes

I think ratbox elluded to your answer on this one.
Consult a registered engineer on this one, they would be well aware of any proposed changes. You can often end up chasing ghosts if you don't talk to the experts.

Unless they've changed the criteria, FB/EK's or any previously registered car for that matter cant be an ICV
If a cars been stamped with a number, registered etc it will always be that car as far as i know.......

Take RustyEK's current build for example, i remember him saying he couldnt build that as an ICV because of the above reasons. And we all know how wild that thing is (complete new chassis etc).

Re: MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
that's one thing that i think is really wrong with the registration system no consistency, of all the engineers i've dealt with in NSW what rusty is doing would be deemed ICV, BUT there is another car on here that's NSW engineered and regoed with a similar setup and his engineer with his interpretation of the rules said it's ok as MPV, where it becomes a problem is instead of say me going to the engineer that's happy with that, i go to another engineer and then complain that the 2nd engineer won't pass it, this then goes back to other people and the cycle of trouble starts
or second senario people that get all there info from the internet
instead of consulting with anybody they see what say rusty is doing and think beauty i'll do that but they live in another state and are dealing with completely different rules build the car then complain that it can't be regoed but such and such's can

Not really...
The rules may have changed a bit since then, but I remember some years back a mate shoved a 351 into a Galant. The rules on what engine you can shove into what car got changed halfway through the build, so the thing ended up being registered as an ICV. This also doesn't mean you have free reign in what you could do to the car, as it has to pass with the design laws of the day. This particular car had to run a straight LPG set up, as it was the only way it would pass current emmisions laws. It also had to have crap like intrusion bars in the doors, extra stop lights, etc.
As Ratbox said, there is too much inconsistancy between engineers. You see some of these cars hitting the road nowadays and you have to wonder how the hell they got registered. If the rules end up getting tightened, there's no one else to blame....
Re: MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
I personally know someone who put a v6 in an anglia (little pommie Rod) and it was deemed ICV , He then had to put side intrusion bars in the doors and get one crash tested - he payed for this ofcourse.
But the car has to pass current day design rules and emmissions if its ICV
Now have a think how hard that would be , Traction control ,anti locking brakes , live axle maybe ,air bags ,padded dash etc etc
We do not want these rules full stop ,and when it does come to it we should all rally against it with force, placards at parliment house sounds good to me.
I have heard there will be a registrar and if you are in a club you can put your cars on that registrar which will cover you for the build ...
What about after that when you wanna build something else , maybe with your kids
GONE .
As you guys know Ive been gathering the cars I like over the years and I would have to move interstate to continue with my plan ,untill they follow suit ...... I will fight and fight and fight against this crap.
Why the hell shouldnt we be doing this stuff .bloody doogooders taking away our freedoms again.

Re: MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
The rules probably havnt changed Cal, their probably just different in WA to other states... As Ratbox said theres no consistency... between states let alone between engineers.
Harko, i never knew that ICV's were that involved...

Agreed with fighting for it. Being a kid, its the future of people like me that will be affected most. Problem is getting everyone to actually do something about it. Everyone leaves it to 'someone else'.
If everyone came together it really wouldnt be that hard to do.. imagine the numbers, it'd be massive

Re: MPV & ICV whats tha dif.....
Thanks to everyone that has posted a reply. Spoke to my blueslip man the other day an he said, that he went to a meeting in Dubbo a few weeks ago, an that they are talking about introducing new categories for vehicle inspectors. Mainly for MPV. Depending on there experience, some, will be able to inspect & pass engine swaps, others, chassis or suspension, ..etc. Each charging apart of the engineers fee. So if you do a motor swap, you only have to see 1 inspector for a fraction of the price of an engineer, to get it passed again. For some it will be great, but others more $$$$. But you will still have the chance to see the engineer once. ICV will be engineers only. Don't know if this is going happen yet,it's still up in the air, and I will be talking more to him & a engineer about this in the next few weeks. He reckons changers roundabout Xmas. I think that everybody with an interest in cars, bikes etc. should be talking to anyone that this could effect, so they can have a say also. I've signed the petition, hope everyone else does to...thanks again POP.
