I have just dis-assembled two brake and one clutch master cylinder and I believe both are the same internally?
Has anybody else had experience with these?

I know one is marked Brake, & one is not,
So there must be a differance somewhere
Best not to mix the parts, it may just be an oriffice size that makes the differance.
The clutch master only has to operate one clutch slave some distance
The brake master has to operate four cylinders less distance.

You see them sold as clutch/disk brake or drum brake master cylinders. I bought one a while ago- I think there is some sort of restrictor inside one but I couldn't tell you if it can be removed or not. So if you have a disk setup they should be the same.

My clutch master cylinder has a sticker on it that says disc brake or clutch.. So im with Jake, disc brake and clutch masters must be interchangable

This question has several answers.

Basically there is no difference between the FE-HR brake & clutch master cylinders. The only internal change is the addition of the residual pressure valve for drum brake master cylinders only. For example, if you dismantled a drum brake master cylinder & threw away this valve & re-assembled it, you could then use it as a clutch m/cyl or a front disc m/cyl.

The original Holden items that were fitted in production, had either BRAKE, CLUTCH or DISC BRAKE cast into the housing, but the internals were the same (apart from this little valve).

Aftermarket cylinders use the same casting for both & then added sticker or tag to identify it as a drum brake m/cyl.

One other alteration worth mentioning was the change to plastic reservoirs for the introduction of disc brakes. For this, they changed the thread size so you can't fit the later reservoirs onto pre-1965 cylinders. This had no effect on their operation.

can you use a tin reservoir with disc brakes or for some reason it's a no no

Provided you pulled the residual valve out of it you should be right.

For those interested I have attached a section view of both the brake and clutch master cylinders with the only internal difference being in the brake master cylinder which has the check valve and the valve seal washer
