Hi K7, in my experience $15 buys you work. $25K gets something great!
A good paint job is $15K these days!

Kat, at $6k or 7k you can be buying more work than you need.
Just get your other half to sell some of those Chryslers and chip in

People have a different perception of the definition of "work needed" when it comes to a car.
A running and registered car with some minor imperfections to me would be a concours car compared to the old bomb I drive around in but that car with it's minor imperfections may be considered a rubbish car to someone who is more fussier than me....... is that making sense??
It all depends on what condition car you are after, your view of what that particular car would be worth and obviously what the owner thinks its worth.
There are some hand crankers out there that think there rusty old "rust free" car is worth tens of thousands and there are some more realistic sellers out there with a better car at a better price.
If you are searching and researching and going out and looking at cars then you can't do much better than that, but some people seem to think their ideal car will find them.......... it don't happen like that.
I'd be revisiting the previously seen owners on the cars and see how the offer you made is going. If their idea of what their car is worth is unrealistic then 9 times out of 10, they will still have that car and some sense of reality may be coming into their mind as to what they may expect for the car/s.
You may then have a chance at your previous offer or a slightly higher offer............ take cash with you........... but go along with your hubby
and a couple of other blokes as backup

.
Chryslers are great, FB/EK's are the greatest

, I know you want you car RIGHT NOW!! but a bit of patience and time and that dream car will be sitting in your garage soon.
Good Luck and keep looking.... don't be a defeatist and give up

3 to 6 K will get you a car that needs total restoration and will have rust and panel repair/replacement issues.
6 to 7 k nowdays will get you a running and registered car, re-trimmed or original but tatty trim. It will show its age and years of use and may need some work but will be usable and enjoyable as much as the top dollar cars but just won't look and feel exactly the same as a better car.
15 K will get you a pretty original good condition car that again, will show its age and years of use and may need some work but will also show that it has been looked after somewhat in the past 50 years......... a "grandfathers" car springs to mind...............
25 K should get you a restored car with nothing much really to do or a pretty mint example of an older original car.
30 K and above, I'd be expecting an absolutely flawless original/restored car or into a well modified car.
There will be some cars that will show some in between pricing and some good and bad condition points and just sometimes, it is still possible to find that absolute bargain car at an absolute bargain price.
These are my thoughts, others may have different thoughts to me............

I see no reason why 15 grand can't get you a car that needs little to no work done to it.
I'm not talking about a concourse car, but something that is quite presentable and doesn't need any major work. Being 50 year old cars, there will be things that always need fixing.
Finding something around the 6-7 grand mark is achievable, but they will need a bit of work. Mine was around that mark, and although it won't win any prizes and needs a bit of body work, is totally drivable and quite presentable.

I've just recently purchased an EK wagon for around what your saying . It's in what I would consider in very good condition, just need a little interier work really. I looked at plenty around the $10k range and they whete good daily drivers but would still need alittle work but good solid rust free cars. I found you had to prepared to travel interstate & be patient and eventually you will find what your looking for. I was looking for well over a year.

I think if you keep looking you'll find what you are looking for in your price range that will need little to no work at all. Maybe broaden the search area a bit.
Alot of people truley don't know how to value a car. They think they've inherited a gold mine when they get nan and pa's old car or see what price's some get not differentiating between what they have and what gets top dollar. There are alot of variables in pricing old cars which makes it hard, but look at Dakam. He got a car that needed minimal work for under half of your budget.
Are you looking for a 100% stocker or not too worried about originality?

Yes I am beginning to agree that prices vary depending on the sellers/buyers perception of the car which makes it very hard to put an accurate $$ value. i think it depends at the end of the day how much DO you really want to buy the car - ifyou love it and have the means - you will buy it. 12k is definatley out of my $$. $6-7k only at this stage. Ideally I would like something that is neat and tidy and looks respectable

Not too worried if its not all original.
