Valve free up ok with some Inox and a hammer but #1 exhaust valve is missing a retaining collet so I think that may be a show stopper for the start up mission.
I’ll move on with the rest of the process...

Yep. If you are short on collets, give me a yell and I'll throw some in the post.

Cheers,
Harv

The old-timers used to feed sash cord down into the spark plug hole until it wadded up good and proper, then turn the engine over on the compression stroke to jam the sash cord into the combustion chamber. The sash cord held the valves shut, and then you could remove the collets, keeper and spring without pulling the cylinder head off.

Oh, and . . .

Pull the distributor out, chuck a long screwdriver shaft into a drill, engage the oil pump drive, and run the drill for a couple of minutes.

Hi Drew;
I had to change valve springs on my Ute engine after I had reassembled it and didn't want to pull the heads again so made up an air fitting to screw into the spark plug hole and connected air compressor to the fitting, if your rings are ok this will keep the valves shut while you comress the spring to fit the collet, just a thought :thumbsup:

Harv I will take you up on that offer, as I don’t have a spare Grey to scavenge parts from.
But I’ll drop by a local head joint first to see if I can get one with out bothering you on such a small task... I’ll hold off for something more serious🤣

Gday Rob and thanks again for the tail gate badge.
Yes that is a good trick that I will use if I can get the motor to actually turn over...
And yes first thing I did was pull the dizzy to turn the oil pump.
More lube the better!!!

She is holding stiff.
