Rosco........I cant thankyou enough for your info.........and its a lot of info!!!

I will certainly make contact with the Hobart guys!!!

The spraying and prep info might have to be explained a bit more  but I`m sure you will get to that!!!

Out of interest, is there a particular colour that comes of the gun the best and is the most forgiving??? Dont want to go picking a colour that might make my life twice as hard on my first attempt. I was thinking something along the lines of light blue, greeny blue, or just plain old white :?

But really not sure yet!!!

I think getting started is the hardest part of this project....just not knowing where to start  :(

usually the lighter the colour the more forgiving as far as prep work goes

Cam another idea is to visit other car forums - (no need to join & not ness Holden) & quite often you pick up hints & idea's on painting, panel beating, welding, etc etc,
Just search via Google for a car club forum (MG, &*#@, Holden) & that gives you the links to the various sites, there is a wealth of info from guys on this forum, also check out the FE/FC Holden site.

Cam,
hopefully we've whetted your appetite for this..............?

I agree with BU -it is definitely worth viewing any material you can - the basics will emerge in each post - you will view and read about stages of prep and painting.......... as you digest information, what you see will become more meaningful and you will understand what lies beneath.....
it truly is a "craft" Cam, but one I hope will amount to much satisfaction...

I still believe the local FE-HR club is probably your best overall option.
They won't mind you visiting - we welcome and encourage people to join but I haven't heard of any visitors (even regular ones) ever being refused admission to meetings............our club welcomes anyone to attend - providing they show a little respect and follow protocol..........

colour - I agree with RB - to me, lighter colours hide imperfections a bit better - I believe it is because they are less reflective of surroundings........ just take a look at the next black or very dark "mirror" finish paintwork you find - you'll see every dent and ripple in it - because of the reflected image...........

I must warn you Cam, that if you go further with this - you are going to blame me for looking differently at every vehicle you come across......... your innocent ignorance is going to be stripped away..........forever..

I am a little hesitant to suggest white - it can be a difficult colour to match - one slight shade out and it will either look dirty or cleaner than the surrounding colour..........or stained with something - our eyes are pretty finely tuned to white.......

Yellow, I find is a very user friendly colour - my Corona is Yellow - there are seven different mixes on it - you can pick only two of them unless told.......

The lighter colours probably won't give you as much "grab" appeal but I believe you aren't after a show finish............. yet...

Lighter colours - especially lighter hues of yellow and more so white, will reflect more of the sun - I remember you mentioning it being left in the sun a lot........?

All of your paint filling/building work is going to be done with primer or "spray putty" - it's not until you have that ready (tell you about guide coat later) that you will even consider running your first colour coat...........later.....

When it comes to working with a light colour - don't believe there is much difference - once the first colour coat is down.
When blocking back between coats, I find I look for an even "matt" over the job and I don't think colour makes a lot of difference here.......later...

What I believe we need to do next is just go back to basics and list the outline from strip to final coat - you'll certainly have some questions running down that list....... or should have..

I put up a lot of stuff last night - do you think I should start a new thread so that people can answer other questions than paint in your build.........?

What does the group think?.......... I'm happy to put up something under my name and run with Cam in it............... they can follow there if interested and leave this thread for other aspects..........?

Rosco

Rosco.......i think a new thread is a great idea on this and a step by step guide is a fantastic idea!!!

Rosco, from what i have heard, its to do with a chemical break down and the heat at which this occurs!!! Thats all i can remember........if i`m wrong....dont kill me :(

I noticed in another post, someone used an HR column..........do you have to use the HR steering wheel or can you still use the ek...wheel...if not...whats the eldest wheel that will fit???

Anything else anyone thinks i should be doing???

Thats not tyre smoke, just a typical worn grey motor with extra worn valve guides and engine oil thats been diluted with copious amounts of the good old Super fuel.
Gregs even got the "thank god is started look"

Hey John,
Close but not on the money!
The grey is actually in the passenger seat hooked up to a chain and pulley so I could use it as a starter motor

No serious the motor that was in that car was a freak. It was a 186 with a high compression head ( cant remember what ) roller rockers and a 35 75 solid cam. I bought the motor off a mate who bought it off a guy he didnt know. When it finally let go (spun bearing) I discovered the crank was 202 ground down to fit the 186 journals, very tricky in those days
The combo of the 4 speed and light ute rear was so much fun . Sorry I let it go :( over 15 years now.
Smoke is real tyre smoke (no photo shop back in them days)

Regards Greg
