Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
Decided to prototype a pulsating trigger switch on my MIG welder. So instead of triggering on and off manually, press the trigger and the feed automagically pulses on and off. Using an Arduino micro controller to switch a 240 volt, 10amp relay. Pretty basic but will add a couple knobs so I can finesse the on and off times whilst using it. At the moment I just preprogrammed 3 settings - 1 sec on/0.5 off, 0.5 on/off,0.5 on/1.0 off. 1/0.5 looked the best. Down side is that you have the trigger pressed the whole time so it’s not great for gas usage. Pic to come. Tapatalk not uploading at the moment

MIG tests with relay
Left to right
1 sec on, 0.5 off
0.5 on/off
0.5 on, 1 sec off
Didn't change the wire speed. More testing when its cooler.

Man... what do you have to do to a backing plate to make it look like that? Looks like chrome plate.

Just one of these and a smaller wire brush. And time. Too much time.

Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
A few random shots of the spaghetti I have to remove. I took this photo as a reference to make sure I put it all back correctly. I wasn't the heavy hand on the handbrake BTW
This was the wiring job I did installing the radio and graphic equalizer (Voxon - Rocks On) back in the day. First purchase - gaffer tape to block up the broken heater, second purchase, new glove box to house the radio.

While the diff was out noticed that the brake hose is attached to a stainless strap and not the tab seen to the right. Was this to overcome a short hose? Those lines are copper - read somewhere here that that's no good? Need new lines?

Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
Brake lines in nickel-coated or copper coated steel are generally OK, but straight copper is normally frowned upon.
They reckon copper work hardens (and it does)... but I have my doubts about using this as a reason to ban it on brake lines. I think this is an old rumour that has since been blown out of proportion. Steel work hardens too. If your brake lines (copper, steel or ally) are moving enough to work harden, they are very, very poorly supported.
Cheers,
Harv

Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
Here a mount for the drivers bucket seat. This has passed an engineers both here in NSW and in Victoria where it was registered in my dad's name when I lived overseas for a couple years.
Not much of a backing plate underneath. Took the nuts off, but still haven't worked out how to get those two little bastards off. Probably end up grinding them off.

Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
Time to get some of that Holden brown gold out of the car. So I have gas, 6mm wire and some small sheets of metal. Found this nice little project to start on. Its where the lower hinge on the passenger side mates to the fire wall.
From the inside - 20 year old silicon from my attempt to stop water getting in.
With my new spot weld drill bit (8mm - bit big, should have got 6mm as well), angle grinder and dremel, cleaned up okay.
New piece of metal, fitted and held in place with a magnet. Formed the patch's curves with an off-cut of gal pipe and a claw hammer. Need to get me a hammer and dolly set. Its ok for where it is.
First few goes with the welder. Did myself no favors with my gaps.My earth clamp was not on the cleanest bit of metal either.
And here's the finished job. Just spraying some zinc weld through primer on everything to help stop the rot. Got some copper weld through coming.

Re: Ol' Rusty - FB/EK Sedan
Scott,
More explanation on the rear brake pipe/hose/clamp setup:
When you put an HR rear axle into an EK, the rear brake hose is almost, but not quite, long enough. So your clamp/bracket/pipe arrangement is to allow the normal length brake hose to be used.
I did a similar Heath Robinson setup when I did an HR disc conversion in the ex-family EK, sometime when Methuselah was a kid. I used a spare rear axle T-fitting, the RHR brake pipe, and a steel bracket which ran down to one of the rear axle mounting bolts.
But we have moved on, and so I would suggest going to somewhere like Burt Bros in Fairfield, explaining the problem, and asking them to custom-make a hose 50 mm longer than the original.

Hi Scott, hinge brace repair seems to be a classic spot for rust and you're onto it. I had 3 of 4 to do. Suggest using paintable seam sealing right around the bracket/pillar join to keep it dry once your finished priming. Maybe wire feed is a bit too fast for the volts on the welder?
Careful with those spot weld drills- don't ask how I know
Keep it up your going well.
