Drivers side has height and forward/back and back angle. Passenger has forward/back and back angle but not height.
To get the steering column centred to the seat the drivers seat needs to be right up next to the centre hump. In this position the back swab is about an 2cm away from the B pillar, and there is about 16cm gap between seat and door openening.

I had a Humber Vogue years ago the seat was offset to the steering wheel took a little time to get used to it but that was how they were made and it worked ok . You may need head rests if it has to be passed by a Engineer, Even if you take them out after inspection

Lancer and X2 falcon were the same, offset. Enough to put me off.

The LC, LJ Torries we’re the same, offset with the steering wheel on an angle to the dash !!!
The seats I used are commodore and the height was ok for this mod, I’m pretty sure they are VN. I have slight offset but not enough for concern.

Yes, headrests are there Billy, just not while I'm fitting up.
The drivers seat won't end up offset to the steering wheel when I'm done, but it will just take a bit of planning on the mount points. It's an interesting exercise doing this - certainly the cab shape and the B pillar design in particular is not conducive to installing bucket seats ( and of course neither is the contour of the floor!). The wider transmission tunnel is making it a bit harder too.

The offset bit is interesting. When I did the seatbelts for the wagon, it assumed the driver’s bum was centred on the bench seat inserts. Did all the measurements, and no way could I make it comply with NCOP.

Lots of discussion with the engineer

Once I offset the seatbelts to the trim, it all worked easily. The belts are centred to the body, but not to the steering wheel. Can’t notice it driving.

On one plane only though and unless you have one of those adjustable camper seat thingys like Wilma, your back is stuck in one spot too. Given you can't buy a new car with a front bench seat I think we can safely assume they have some limitations Clay. However, you have successfully made your enthusiasm known.
If I can't get my buckets to work for me I will happily put the bench seat in and enjoy that expansive and somewhat slippery joy too...

Nice call on the Forester seats Brett. I have an 06 Outback I have been planning to steal the seats from to test fit when the time comes. Taken many measurements and figured they would work. Or I could wait for my son to replace his 06 Forester seats with WRX seats and grab them. As for the offset - current bucket seats were offset quite a lot. You get used to it - plus it will be harder to rest your arm out the window the further you move them in.

Hi Scott. Outback ones are probably fancier as the Forester ones are pretty basic seats and mounts maybe the same. I have started on passenger one and ended up with the back swab about 1cm away from B pillar. It seems to be OK in terms of hanging arm out the door.
I tend to drive with right hand on the wheel mostly so the inevitable offset won't matter much I'm guessing.

It's amazing all these things that turn up when you attempt to make a change. I guess that's why there were a team of design and engineering people involved when they built them.

Jumping around a bit on jobs today but spent a little bit of time playing with seat mounts. Bolts to go on the back of each plate as well.
Plan would be to make plates for around the front and sides to close the seat in a bit. Maybe even old bench seat trim pieces on the sides.

Some steel sides, modified to suit, would look good IMHO. Blacky's recent job making a centre console made me realise how much the shape/pressings make the pieces fit into the whole interior, and not look like an add-on.
