Harv is all over it !!

The only issue with LED's and alternator current is that current draw is not enough on some installs and the alternator will not charge.
So the box gives the alternator current, and it also lets the alternator see voltage both sides of the light. This allows the light to turn off when there is equal volts from the battery side and the alternator side usually around the 13 volt mark.
Harv is lucky because some alternators will hold a residual magnetic current and will work with just a LED. This is the control box that I bought only because I don't want any issues like the above, simple to wire as well,

I should have explained backfeed.

Step 4: You turn the ignition switch off, which disconnects the battery from the coil. The engine theoretically has no spark, so it dies. However, the alternator is still spinning around, making power as the engine winds down. The L terminal still has +12V. If the idiot light is high enough wattage, it will let enough power flow backwards to power the coil (+12V from the L terminal, through the madly glowing idiot light, to the coil, just like the purple arrow in my dodgy diagram above). The poor engine still has spark, despite the battery being disconnected from the coil. The damn thing won’t stop!

To prevent this, you can:
a) fit a low wattage idiot light, so the backfeed current is too low to fire the coil (an LED is a nice low-current option),
b) fit a diode in the idiot light wiring (the green line) so that current cannot flow from the alternator to the idiot light (an LED is a nice diode)

Well it all hinges on this !!!! A night shift done, cleaned and sandblasted all the door hinges.

Got up early to beat the heat and 2 hours later hinges done.

I cheated with the paint a little today, just a trick from a spray painter mate.

First epoxy
Then base coat with a touch of hardener, the base coat is urethane but normally no hardener is used because its sole purpose is colour with no strength. The hardener ties it into the epoxy
Last 3 coats of clear, with no sanding or mucking around and the hinges are done ready for install tomorrow.


So this is all done wet on wet meaning before the hardener fully cures, its a bit tricky because you have to let the solvents out between coats, this is referred to as flash off. Now I can put a door on and free up the panel stand for the next one.

No More today way to hot !!!!!!!!

the hinges look amazing.
I have heard mention of this "wet on wet" between tradies when at a commercial supplier picking up paint.. I never knew what it meant, and the exchange was so quick between them that it was all I got... they obviously knew the process... and that simple exchange of just three words was enough.....

I now understand the process, thank you... it will save a lot of sanding and keying up... keeping the coats "fresh" so that they will bond - and possibly "fuse" for an almost solid "one coat" result, even though there are five or six wet coats of differing materials.

Looking very good... Issue I see is, to my limited experience with 2K - how brittle is this paint when tightening bolts down on it to secure the hinges?
I understand the clear is a lot softer than the colour and primer...

Crappy weekend, spent Saturday changing rear control arms and swaybar links on my Patrol with the intention of a big Sunday on the EK.
Ahhhhh no, lost power most of the day and had to watch the pelting rain from inside the house !!!!

All I could manage was a hinge repair / replacement of the spring clip, only found it when I went to install it of course !!!

Rivets from factory so I ground and punched them out and tapped the holes and used small head screws with locktite.
A bit boring really.

I think you get rivets with the kit which has put me off a bit. Looks easier with screws the way you’ve done it there. It is a pain when the door won’t stay open so console yourself.

Thanks Guys,

Started the headlining after spending most of the weekend cleaning and painting the bows. I will let it hang for a week or so then start the install, hopefully most of the creases will settle. Also prepped the front doors for final rub back and colour this weekend hopefully.

You know all this, but apparently once the headlining is in - a hair dryer will take out most of the loose parts..... think there was a thread on it somewhere.

Color - that will cheer you up.... and give you some impetus to get moving...

Computer is still playing up here.. can't access my files until Micro-scunge fix the latest updates for Win 8.1... I'm having to log in as a guest on my own machine..... grrrrrr

Oops... forgot to mention, I see your can of SW-2 on the floor... bought some myself and have used it on a newly acquired 6 x 4 trailer... stuff seems to work well...... dries pretty much as fish oil does and can be over-painted with enamel primer/topcoat once it goes dry enough ... happy so far.
Bought my can from Bodyshop Auto Paint supplies in Bayswater (Vic)... $52.00
