Today and tomorrow to be spent sorting out back of cab and tray supports that come from it. Access is a bit ordinary. Grabbed cuts from my ute relics to contribute.

Today's thought bubble: Aluminium checker plate for tray floor insert?

I suppose you could put it on a light rhs frame to make it sit flush. You could leave out the missing bearers and replace with the RHS. The frame would stiffen it so you can lift it.

It's only my opinion, but please no . It would look like one of the wannabe 90's Toyota mini-trucks. Your workmanship deserves better.

I reckon polished or stained timber, either laminate sheet or individual boards. Prefer dark stained laminate, similar to original.

Opinions may differ, your results may vary.

The aluminium would be serviceable / practical for carrying various loads however I agree timber with polished strips would be better

For Grace's ute, I got a length of rubber sheeting from Bunnings and made a DIY tray liner. Stops the VB cartons rolling around when I'm doing low-level aerobatics on the way back from the bottlo:


For those days when I pretend its not a workhorse, the rubber comes out and the stained laminate with a coat of estapol and ally strips look neat:

I prolly should have done the rubber thing. But rubber can be heavy, for us weight watchers.

Well, checker plate it is!
Ha just kidding, I will do the right thing. Not sure sheet or boards as yet. Maybe 3ply with laminate type boards stuck on. I'm keen to have 2 sections. Anyway that is well down the track.

Has taken all day to make a piece that has the front tray gutter with rust repair sections for each side and right angle sections to attach top and bottom cabin wall sections. Will see how it goes fitting it up tomorrow.

12mm Marine ply is the right thickness and very stable.

This is mine Brett couldn't find a dark stain that suited the body colour so lime washed the marine ply and polished stainless strips.

Hey Neil, I'm pretty sure mine won't be that flash. I can see all your lights in the reflection from the polished bars. I'll be happy if mine holds together well enough to carry a bag of cement.
For those of you that chuckled at the time, I am now starting to come around from my idea that having 4 doors is more work than 2 and a tray .
