Drew, Bunnings sell a sticky backed stove top to counter seal strip. It's a perfect fit for air flap thingy.

So had a couple of hours spare this morning so I fitted the pedal box assembly.

Damn that spring is a MTHRFKR.

No wonder you guys said to do it on the bench, would have been near impossible in the car.

Next up is the handbrake assembly but to do that I need to fit the firewall insulation so I pulled it off the shelf and man it’s bloody not looking nice.

The boards are cracked and the felt insulation is dry and crumbly…

Does anyone reuse this piece?

I could use dynamat but for some reason in hesitant incase any moisture gets behind it.

Maybe I should rip the felt off and put the dynamat behind the board, I guess it would hold the board together too.

What’s your opinion dudes?

Pretty sure you can buy them new from rares, if you want to save $$$$ then Dynamat on firewall for noise and a bit of felt or insulation on the back of the board for heat.

My opinion is to re-use your present firewall insulation. It looks to be in pretty good condition, considering; but if it falls apart when you touch it, it might be better to buy a repro. Reproduction ones are available, from the classic gloveboxes guy (is that Martin Frigo?).

I've tried 2 different sources for these firewall boards and both of them were nothing like the originals. Particularly the smaller piece that goes around the kframe strut. If you can reuse your originals it's a good plan. In my case I used the new big piece and re-attached the original smaller piece- that was my best option.

A light coat of hairspray will stop the horsehair from crumbling down onto the carpet.

I gave one of my original ones a quick clean and a dusting of matte black rattle can. It was pretty reasonable condition. Part of my motivation was that the repro were on back order. And some needed painting.

Yeah matt black paint on the fronts for me too. Next drama will be the repro plastic clips. Nothing but trouble for me.

Cheers for all the feedback and the general consensus is that I should be keeping the original.

The ‘horse hair’ as Harv called it can go in the bin. It’s stinks like rats piss from the nest that was in the car when I got it.

It thinks Blackya idea of the dynamat on the firewall and new felt on the board is probably the best option.

I have some dynamat left over from the roof and actually have a heap of felt which came with the floor carpets so I’ll snap a stop of that and glue it on.

A quick paint job and she should look like new I hope.

Brett did you source new clips at all? If so where did you find them?

Rares got them. I agree they are a bugger to fit. I used a combination of pushing from the inside e while pulling on the pointy end with pliers, as well as vasoline.

Drew, new clips came with the new panels, bur they are Rares parts anyway (TC 1012). The issue I had was they were too tight for the holes.
