Re: Road trip
my grandfather, who has been a mechanic for years, started his aprenticeship on the fj holdens, said he has never seen this happen.
this crack has happened up the front of the crank not the rear, aperently it was common for VW's.
Now his theory is cause my motor had the red motor hamonic balancer on it this has happened, due to it being smaller than the origanal grey harmonic balancer.
he feels that sympithetic vibrations due to the smaller balancer may be why this has happened. maybe??
what are peoples thoughts?

Re: Road trip
sounds possable if there were harmonics or mild vibration caused by the balancer you'de think the front of the crank is where it will affect, BUT then i think it's reasonably common for the red balancers to be fitted so you think it would have happened to more people
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Re: Road trip
I also broke the crank in my grey a few years ago..
I had the engine rebuilt and the the rebuilder (Action Engines Flemington) said it had something to do with the steel timing and cam gear being too tight (not enough backlash)
Anyhow, he sent the timing gear off to have 10 thou shaved off the timing gear before reinstalling it... They grey has been great ever since with many miles done..
