After I ran down to cars on the coast at Port Noarlunga the other Sunday, I started noticing what I hoped wasn't thrust bearing noise. So I finally popped off the clutch cover for a gander.Sure enough, the thrust face is very slightly riding on the clutch fingers, oh no! So much for my condidered measuring.I've done 430 miles on it since installation, and it is only just riding. It will spin free if I snug the slave back with my fingers. I will see how I feel about pulling the driveine again when I'm ready to change the head over. Otherwise I may be able to slip the box back enough to wreck out a spacer without damaging anything else, or just pull the box. Another thought is to add an extra sandwich plate twixt bellhousing and block.

Clay if you have noise then it's rooted.
Pilot error big time, you know what they say, measure twice cut once !
Oh well at least you know what it is.

Hi Clay,
I have one of those too. You can get it out by unbolting the box from the bellhousing and sliding box back (on my beastie at any rate). My info was that as the clutch wears, the fingers come outwards. My guess is that your clutch plate has settled down this is what has happened here. Unlikely to have caused any problems.

I measured it four times, don't worry Greg. I speculate something has changed in the geometry as brett offered, or hydraulics. The slave wasn't bled up for measurement, though I considered this. I followed the instructions closely and even checked dummy assembly, using a piece of dab-off to verify clearence.

Good to know Brett. You cut the shim through in a couple of places to drp out, I assume?

Acknowledging what Greg says is that if it makes a noise, it is stuffed. However, donning my optimist hat, I managed to split the driveline in the car and cut the front shim with a small chisel and hammer against the oil slinger retainer cast boss, and reef it out.
I did have heater hose around the speedpro hoses that go in through the old clutch fork hole to prevent rubbing on the top edge. This had some potential to push the slave toward the clutch, so I removed the hose and clearenced the housing with a round file. I adjusted the pedal to master rod to remove any play, which of course pushed the bearing up against the fingers. Backed off to minimal play in rod and obtained adequate clearence at the fingers. Time to don the boardshorts and go for a test drive to he beach.

I think you'd want the specified 1/8" pedal free travel when adjusting the master cylinder pushrod. Any less, and the compensating port won't be uncovered . . .

Thanks Neil. You are not wrong. After an hour of suburban driving the same noise was evident occasionally. If it stays as is it will be liveable. Time will no doubt tell.

In other new to hand the 161 head is ready.Just a freshen up, with the springs from the old head. Larger exhaust valves and some unshrouding.ports matched to gasket.A bit off the short turns.

The head looks the goods, why are we never finished with these things ?

Hope the bearing has survived the stress if any, and sorry for being so pessimistic, its just something i have been through before.

It would be tempting to get rid of some of those port casting goobers with a Dremel, though you'd have to strip it down and clean all the grit out again. Mebbe overkill for this one.
