I'm kinda in the middle on the canopy.

It has the cool factor that you don't see them anywhere anymore. It would also be practicable when you want to go somewhere and have stuff "locked in" to the tub (shopping, gear when staying in a motel etc).

It does detract from the neat ute lines though, and would not be as easy to get stuff in and out (surfboards, cartons of that beer-like substance they sell in SA).

How does the canopy attach? Can it be readily removed, or is it major surgery?

Cheers,
Harv

It comes on and off pretty easily Harv. Just four corner attachments. Prolly easier with boards in a way as no need to fool with the cover and can leave the tailgate up for that boy racer spoiler effect.

Hi Clay
I’m not really a fan of the canopy either mate but it is cool and will make your Ute different to all the rest what’s the plan mate? paint it or strip and varnish? it is made of plywood right?

Prolly just rub back and marine varnish Neil. Paint inside. Renew some fasteners. It’s ply.

I like it, and I like it more if it’s easily removed.

Be good for sleeping in on Nullarbor runs , save risking a horrible disease from places such as Madura Pass - hey Firekraka and Western Wagon ???? 🤣🤣🤣

I am imagining marine-meets-vintage-guitar-amplifier -

Varnished wood, polished aluminium strips, black vinyl roof.

Thanks fellas. Restoration is on the list. It’s a nice long one, to paraphrase A. A. Milne……

Back to the engine. I had a mishap and damaged a couple of pistons spitting them out of the bottom of the bores while changing to softer valve springs. Had a chat with Furey and the boys at Lonsdale engines. New hyperutectic pistons and rings are on order #$%^&*. They can't buy single pistons.

Furry said the chromolly flywheel and clutch will be fine. He questioned the need to use softer springs to run the cam in as mine aren't that heavy anyway, I don't know. He blamed the failure on lack of zinc additive and bad luck.

So I will just hone the bores and reassemble. Run in with the soft springs. I will measure the deck height and look at getting my small chamber head done up to suit for more flow and comp. Just larger inlets and a slight port radius.

All nice and clean at least.Image
While I'm waiting I can change the booster over. Next job.Image

Sorry to hear about the pistons.

Good to see the shaving cream and razor coming out though
