Triple carbs look great Clay. Should be all good after your bedtime reading and a bit of adjustment

I have a habit of doing things the long way. Good to get it running. Now I need to rip it all off and install a nice new manifold gasket. I reused it for the X2 manifold, but this rig has been on and off a dozen times. Copious vacuum leaks are apparent.

I think it is as good as any Brendon. They are fairly simple beasts.

Notwithstanding above, I’ve had to walk away from the thing after trying to get it running. There is obviously a vacuum leak after meticulously cleaning all the surfaces and replacing the gasket. I ran a straight edge over the inlet manifold face and thought it looked fairly flush. I made sure all the washers were seating nicely and not binding. I did get it idling about 800rpm. Started playing with mixtures and seems to be very lean. Sprayed ether on top of the inlet and the revs picked up again. Walked away.

Pardon me for pointing this out, but I just happened to notice, on the "engine-running-with-triple-SUs" photo, that the brake booster hose wasn't connected to the fitting in the manifold.

Could this be part of your lean idle troubles?

Well spotted Rob but no. I am using coarse threaded studs and 12 point nuts. Wondering if I am under torquing as all I can get on them is a short 7/16” ring spanner.

Meanwhile reverted to putting things back together under the dash. Had to cut a hole out of the corner of the parcel tray to accomodate my 12V isolator switch.

I'm a bit puzzled with the heater pipes. They usually have one hose coming off the water pump inlet to create the flow. Is there a decent flow in and out of the thermostat housing?

As long as you have a '66 and onwards cylinder head, the bottom hose outlet on the thermostat housing is connected to a passage in the cylinder head.
The passage in the cylinder head comes out at the right front of the head, where it is connected to a drilled passage in the block, via a hole in the head gasket. The drilled passage in the block comes out at the front of the block, where it's connected to a little oval hole on the water pump's mounting face, leading to the inlet side of the water pump -

- "now hear the word of the Lord. Disconnect disconnect dem - dry bones . . . "

Thanks Rob. Me thinks that a direct connection to the pump is desireable. Will be interested to hear from Clay how the heater performs.
