Clay,

Money-saving trick from an old Holden mechanic in the car club - get the threaded portion of the idler arm support copper-plated at an electroplater's.

HD king-pin front suspension, eh? You don't reckon you could go get the uprights, stub axles, brakes, drums and hubs, do you?

Cheers Glen, got you now. I’ll pm you but I’ve pretty well got everything I need now.

Rob
I am sure he would part with the bits. I’ll call him tomorrow if I think of it.

The idler arm support I bought new for $20 but I could do something with the thread which is attached to the arm. So is it the male part that gets plated, or the brass bush?
Cheers
Clay

Clay
For those of us following along at home can you identify which bit needs repair / replating? Too lazy to go and dig out the manual from the shed to help. For once I’m not in the shed!

Your cracking on with it too, good to see.

Regards
Stephen

If you read back a bit Steven you will see that the steering linkage failed at the pitman arm to drag link joint. This prompted me to look at overhauling the entire linkage, or replacing with the later HD HR linkage which bolts up and is said to improve steering response.

Clay,

I think it's the male thread (the support itself) that gets plated, since it's difficult to get good plating thickness inside a blind threaded hole (the bush).

Good to know thanks Rob though being both lazy and effluent I may just buy a new one for $30.

The adjuster tubes are all seized pretty tight on the old steering. One of the HD tie rods came apart ok. Having trouble getting the other outer off though. I’ve tried putting it out in the slow combustion for 10 min then dip the end in water. Eventually I resorted to brute force and ignorance. ImageImage

Is this an offering to the gods of taper joints Clay? Or a victory salute?
Congrats if it’s the latter Image

So once your steering is all together and working well, could you list for me each component and its origin? The steering on my Ute is all good for now, but if/when I replace it all, I’m keen to update to later model spec.

Curious to know what final combo you settled on.

Cheers, Joe

Yeah that was a random shot Joe. I was showing mate Glen how to use Tapatalk by snapping the drag link he exchanged for 2dozen of my girls bum nuts. Welcome to the forum Glen (gledge). Very enjoyable perusing your shed this am mate.

If I wait till then I’ll forget Joe. Simply upgrading steering linkage to HD HR which is said to be both stronger and more precise and bolts straight up to FE - EH and possibly humpy steering arms sector shaft and idler support. Monroe gas shocks. Steering box brace.
