R for racing.... or at least peelouts.
Now I need to turn my collar up... I think my red neck is showing

I got the box back together this arvo. The lay shaft was very fiddly to get all 92 roller bearings and 4 thrust washers in with the dummy shaft. Dummy shaft was very tight to drive out. Now the lay gear is quite tight. It all turns but a lot of resistance. Something doesn’t seem right. I’m pretty sure I’ve got it all back together right but may be some swarf from driving the shaft through. Looks like it is coming apart again. 8 (

Got some gear oil in to the shaft and seems to be freeing up ok. Seems to be zero end thrust in the laygear making it tight.

The last Aussie 4 speed I rebuilt was that bloody tight you could barely turn it , threw it back in and gave it a good flogging and it was as good as gold

You read my mind Blacky. Just needs bedding in.
Speedo drive gear is my next issue. It is quite concave and appears to be well worn.

Sourced new speedo drive from off the shelf at Adelaide Rare Spares yesterday. Woke up at 4am what to do? Down to the shed and put the box back together bar bell-housing. The torque settings on some of those little bolts had me worried about snapping one or two off. They just keep turning. I think the gasket former must be still compressing.

Two steps forward, snap. 24Nm broke 30Nm rated bolt, well according to Gregorys.

Somehow it seems ironic I'm going to the trouble of putting a 1971 three speed in a 1961 car, but then the motor is 63 I think.

Ready for the column to arrive.

you cant not have a bolt in a hole and not expect that

Can't remember the bolt size on that side cover, but 24Nm is getting a little hefty. For a dry, mild steel bolt it would need to be 5/8"AF or larger at that torque.
Then again, I'm always pretty good at "tighten it up until it snaps then back it off half a turn"

With the gasket goo and tightening it all up that cover isn’t coming off in a hurry and probably would work with no bolts. But I replaced them all from another box and just torqued everything to nizentite. Bellhousing bolts went to 40Nm.

Clay,
You can sometimes get hydraulic lock if the holes are not clean and tidy, or the bolt bottoms out before it clamps.
I'm sure you've sorted although !
