X2s used ganged shafts and W-clips to connect the throttle shafts together. This arrangement is more reliable than might appear, and if GM-H adopted it, I'd call it a vote of confidence. The extension shafts were like a standoff, internally threaded at one end to screw onto the throttle shaft, and with a shoulder to reduce the OD to the same size as the W-clip. I seem to remember that once the extension shafts were tightened onto the throttle shafts, they were then cross-drilled (across the flats of the throttle shaft) and a small-diameter roll-section pin driven through to retain the extension shafts in position. Thread-locking compound would work just as well. Since you're pretty handy with machine tools, you could make up a pair of extension shafts, and do away with one W-clip.

With a ganged throttle shaft setup you can use the original throttle linkages with only minor modifications. Cast headers (e.g. Jack Myers) clear the original linkages way better than extractors.

I have a festy old X2 setup down the back. I could post a photo of the throttle shaft arrangement, if you'd like.

Or, referring to photo of manifold in milling machine - drill through the outer stud hole of each carburettor flange and tap the holes from the underside. Machine away some material on the underside of the bosses, to make two mounting pads in the same plane as the throttle shafts, and mount the external shaft via brackets to the new holes. The best place for an external shaft is directly under the existing throttle shafts, but that's usually impossible. The closer you can get to the side of the manifold, the better.

Thanks Rob, I read you reply many times and googled X2 manifold linkages.
I think I follow what you are talking about.

The whole seed that started this was knowing that the current throttle shaft won’t work with my accelerator pedal linkages.
I was actually planning on going a cable set up, but you have given me the idea that it actually may not be necessary.

If I could get this twin carby set up running well on the factory accelerator pedal to carby linkage I would be happy to do that for sure.

If that is the case I may not have to do anything to the manifold.
The mods on the manifold was to create a mount for an external throttle shaft and also a mount for a accelerator cable.

Also just really wanted to but the situation out before painting the fire wall in case I had to do any mods for the accelerator cable.

I did however drill some holes in the underside of the manifold, which will be handy if I need to mount anything in the future.

The aftermarket W-clips can slip. Get the carbs on, synchonise them, then give them a light zap (tack, not goober weld) with the mig to lock the clips to the cross-shaft.

Sometimes having the main shaft too close to the manifold gives 'orrible angles. For Grace's triples, I had to move the shaft lower. Redline sell cool ball gimbals to suit the hex main shaft.

That’s a good reference photo thanks mate, gives me a good idea on setting it up if I choose to go that way in the future.

I think for now I will stick with the W clips and just get on with the cable conversion to keep the job moving along.

So this arvo i extended the shaft on the accelerator pedal and dummy fitted it to my garden art in the front yard.

I thought I had better check y frame clearance and I’m glad I did.

I did the extension about 30mms but in reality 20mms is a better fit.

Once I was happy with it all I welded a cable mount to the wagon,
End result is ‘so far so good’ and I can now move on with painting the firewall area.

After getting tha accelerator pedal and cable mount sorted 8 gave the prepped firewall a scuff over and painted with etch primer.

This should give the protection required to give me the time to get the wagon back on the rotisserie and hit the underbody body inside and outside.

Things are finally moving in the right direction after 6-8 months of rust repairs!

Nice drew. Nothing like fresh paint. Zinc phosphate epoxy sounds like good stuff. Has to be 2 pack? You picked the right weather mate it's relatively warm and dry in Adelaide last couple days.

Gday Clay, it’s actually single pack mate.
10% thinners if you want but I just sprayed it straight of of the can.
Epoxy 2 pac primer is all the rage these days but I’m doing lie they did in the 80s, nice and simple!

I use paving paint under my cars , its cheap as buggery, tough as nails , you can bomb it on about a quarter of an inch thick and sticks like shit to a blanket
