G'day Clay,

The tailgate latch has caught my eye. Grace's latch looks like the "stub" of your one (the bit you riveted the extension to), and is a right proper pain to actuate. You have to dig your fingers into the tailgate to grab the stub end. Grace's latch had been painted (perhaps repaired too) by a previous owner. I had always imagined that the "stub" was normal.

Any idea what an original, unbroken latch looks like? (Joe, if your reading, what does your latch look like? Wait.... that doesnt sound right ).

Nice work Clay,
Your tailgate latch lever looks good. That railway iron is very handy. I have a length in the shed too. Mind you I have to make sure I have an extra 2 weetbix for breakfast before I think about moving it cause it's bloody heavy!

Too easy. I reckon Bill must’ve picked up a good, low mileage tailgate from the wrecker after Leroy was rear ended - it’s entirely rust free and the latch mechanism is un-worn.

Clay, the utes as you know are a standard, standards did not have the chrome uprights in the grille so the grille in the ute is correct

Thanks blacky. I’m still learning about these mysterious FB commercial and standard bodies. Explains why my spare grille also lacks the posts. Anyway I like them. The ute will probably get chrome head and tail lights in current configuration as well as stainless windscreen mould, so the posts won’t be too out of place. When it gets painted down the track it may be a different story. The painted dash stays though.

My Ute has also received the bling treatment, including chrome dash cluster, from the previous owner. Like you, I’m used to it now, but I’m starting to go the other way! I’ve grown to love the look of painted light surrounds on Standards.

Mine would likely go back to full original if it ever got repainted..

By the by, are you going to try to rub it back to the original Wedgewood blue all over?

That’s right Joe. If it looks too bad I may do a thin coat of closed door enamel or similar but otherwise I’ll probably just buff and wax it. Paint couldn’t look any worse than it does currently.

Speaking of blingWibroc side mirror from the stash.

Time for a final underside gurney before I put some wheels on now.
