Thanks Greg for the information as I was sure someone had done this before.
I did massage the side of the tank to clear the spring shackle bolts also.
The up over the diff and through the springs would require me to re-make the exhaust pipes.

I checked out the sedan I started to build way back, where I used a VL tank that fits neatly between the rails.
No room for exhaust down the side so I'm not sure where I will run the pipes.

On the hunt for a suitable tank or I may modify the original one by cutting in half and adding to it.

Cheers,
Roger

I trimmed up the hole today so I have fairly straight edges to work with.

Thanks Clay on the heads up on the exhaust. I would be spitting if I have completed the XB tank and then fitted the driveline and exhaust.

Cheers,
Roger

here's a tip  tail pipes from an XB (something makes me think i remember wagon  but could be all XB) depending on your ride height will bring your exhaust to the outside of the spring

Yes, I had xb tailpipes on my EH with sbc years ago. Only needed minor tweaking.

Same here,

XB tailpipes, they do need some cutting and shutting but will fit.

They end up tight but ok as with everything once you start modifying.

My exhaust is ceramic costed so do not want the change it now.

I have been looking a replacement tanks, Mustang etc and they are not baffled ???
With a EFI, I can understand but do I need this for a 2 barrel carbied car ?

Cheers,
Roger

Commodore tanks have a swirl pot in then Rog were the pick up sits in so acts as the baffle I suppose.
I would think that with any of these tanks you are going to have the same width problem, didn't Brett with Project 2 have a standard Ute tank made from somebody??? that would solve your issue of the exhaust I suppose.

I have the new 16 gallon, 64 - 68 Mustang tank now for Custom Mustang in Melbourne.
Including the pickup and mounting screw $384 delivered to Adelaide.

I needed to fill the big hole I cut from the XB tank so I built a frame.
A bit of cutting, a little rolling and folding followed but a bit of welding.
Then a heap of grinding.
With no shrinker / stretcher I had to do the old pie cuts on the front edges.
The rear corners were a bugger but happy with the results.

I did a slight trim on the corners of the tank to get it to sit down.
The next one I do will be for Retro Richard but so much easier now I have had a practice.

Cut the inlet off and will patch then add a new one to match the in tub setup I have.

Roger

Happy to say I have finished the fuel tank.
Relocated the inlet to the side.

Subtle mod on the wheel tub Roger, deleting the filler recess.

Reckon that is Phil’s car blacky.
