No conclusion on the motor, other than an absence of oil leading to scrubbed main bearings. Oil pump checked out OK.

Engineer booked for the final inspection Monday 18th.

The wagon passed it's second engineering inspection. Only fault was another 6" run of fuel line that needed insulating from exhaust heat (fixed on the day). Engineer is a little concerned about the brake pedal being hard, despite the booster/vac tank/electric pump. Worries me, as there is little room for a bigger booster, nor for a longer pedal.

The car now needs to have it's brake checks done, so dropped it off to his property for him to do at his leisure while I am at work. Hopefully the pedal effort will be low enough to be acceptable.

40 minute drive out to his property was a good test, and it's longest run to date. Exhaust is a little droney, though clears out at 60mph. It certainly likes to boogey with my right boot into it.

Cheers,
Harv

Hi Harv;
Mate after getting your advice I have fitted a vac pump and tank to my ute and finally think I have my problem solved, when the pump is running pedal is pretty soft but I haven't tried it under power yet.
When I posted this question on my build there were a couple of suggestions (much thanks to you) one of which proved true; I could not suck or blow through the valve in the booster so changed it for one that worked I also tested the vacuum on the manifold with a vac gauge and found I had very little vacuum.

I assume that you have checked these things as I am sure you are all over it but I thought I would mention them.

Yep, I've only got 13"Hg at idle. The tank/pump setup I have should sort that. Fairly confident it is running as per intent: when you first start the car, the pump runs up then the Hobbs switch turns it off. If you press the brakes twice, the pump kicks in again.

Cheers,

Hi Harv I've disconnected completely from the manifold at the moment, running my engine on the factory Delco it only has 5"Hg at idle but Blacky suggested that once tuned on a Haltech or similiar that may come up but I think I will still run the pump with it even if it does come up.

Good luck sounds like you are on top of it.

Hey Harv
The engine has had a lot of work done to it but I don't think the cam is that lumpy Blacky and I thought it was more the case that the engine was on the standard ECU and not a tuned Heltech which I was unfortnately unable to get from the guy I bought the engien off as he had already sold it separately before I got to him with the engine.
Don't know much about cams and the numbers are mumbo jumbo sometimes but here they are maybe you can make sense for me.

The attached comparison may help. Apologies that I left all the various V6 specs in... I can't remember which model your engine was. Looks like a quite lumpy cam, but not a monster.

Harv
Really appreciate you doing that great to see the comparisons, sorry for stealing your thread, the engine does have a lot of other work done to it Ute won't go into it further.
Thanks again.

Quick photo of how the old girl looks. The Apache Red was a good choice. The "O" managed to fall off the bonnet... maybe it is a sign that I need to change the lettering to HOONEN. The bonnet allignment is abysmal, but the hinges have no more adjustment. Need to remove the bonnet and hinges to elongate the holes. The red leatherette steering wheel isn't that flash (too modern), but is better than the wood-rimmed one that I had (once your hands got sweaty, the wood rim was very slippery). Lots of touch-up work to do.

About the bonnet Harv. Did you change subframe, guards, doors?

Yes, yes and yes. The poor thing had more panel colours than a crocheted blanket. To quote Adam Sandler's song:

Bald ^$%#@'* tires
You got a piece of #$%^ car
No rearview ^$%#@'* mirror
Piece of #$%^ car
Seven different colors
You got a piece of #$%^ car
^$%#@'* rag for a gas cap
Piece of #$%^ car
Tailpipe makes the sparks fly everywhere
