You would be surprised  , These cars had V4, V6, V8's, the 4 cyl was a 2 stroke that made up to 130 hp, so they probably would leave any grey for dead  , Trev 8) .

Now getting back on track. Bought the ol girl not knowing if she ran or not. Engine was complete and not pulled apart so I thought there might be a chance.
So this arvo went like this
1. Bought a battery and put it in
2. Checked to see if had ignition lights on dash....check
3. Check to see if she turns over...check
4. Had wife turn key so I could check spark at points (reset the gap) and a plug...check
5. Pulled air filter off and poured abit of fuel down the carb
6. Pulled choke and hit the key
7. Woohoo (insert happy dance here) :D :D   it runs
8. Drove it in and out of the garage, another woohoo clutch and box work

So I was stoked, let it warm up and the 186 idles smooth and is quiet.

Now remember this car has sat outside since 1993 and the woman who sold it to me said it had been driven once or twice since then. But couldn't remember when the last time was.

She had given it to a friend who wanted to restore it and two months later she was paying for it to be towed home as he had taken off to WA for work and left it at the house he was living and it wasn't running.

She had refused stupid offers for years and a month ago was toying with the idea of scrapping it, but luckily for me the scrap prices are low.

She also had a guy offer her a $1000 month in month out, but never actually fronted with the money.

A mate of mine told me about it, I went around and the deal was done.

You would have never of guessed it, but when putting it on the trailer the bloke who had offered the $1000 drove past (he looked pissed off).

Anyway I reckon all I'll have to do for rego is some small things like brakes (leaky wheel cylinder? as no fluid in resivior) and a tail light lense.

If you can't tell I'm stoked :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Oh and she is polishing up real well :P  . More pics on the weekend.

I sure was. I sold the wagon to put money in the bank towards a house deposit so to find an early holden just to tinker and cruise for $500 I'm really stoked. :D

Hey Grimbo,

Love what your doing with the HD, I agree that the "rat" or "patina" is for some and looks cool but it isn't for me. I remember walking around FB mad's car at the nationals, it was cool to see something different to most of the super clean big dollar cars there but I can remeber thinking man I would be hopeless with this thing, I couldn't own it a single day without polishing it to an inch of it's life and get it looking it's very best.

You mention that HD stands for Holden Diaster I was sure everybody who was into cars had heard this one untill I mentioned it to a hr owner and they had no idea what I was talking about. Apparently back in the day Holden submited the HD to the design gurus (ADR) and they deemed it fit for production. Soon after the powers that be noticed when these things were hitting pedestrians the pedestrians were getting seriously injured because of the front mudguards that protrude out past the headlights. Deeming this model the Human Danger. It became a bit of a joke untill the do gooders cried enough and confronted Holden on thier design. Holden argued that they passed it so they had no grounds. The powers that be, basicly said well too bad you HAVE to change that design as your killing people, and we never should have passed it in the first place.

Holden suddenly realised that they had to change thier design ahead of schedule and came up with the HR and it became known as Hastily Revised to change the "dangerous" design of the HD.

Not sure how true these stories are as they happened a bit before my time :) but still a good story.
