Glad to hear you are on top of it

out of curiosity what steering and column setup are you using and what do you think of it ??

It's got the standard steering column with a universal joint welded to a shaft that goes through the firewall, then another universal joint to the steering on the front end.
Driving along as the camber changes on the road I hardly have to make any steering corrections it just steers straight ahead rock solid and reasonably light to steer not like power steering of course but not far behind but having the standard steering wheel to give the mechanical advantage in its size helps as well.
The only down side is the turning circle seems to be large so I generally do U turns at T intersections.

I have no history on the modifications to this vehicle so I only know from google image searches and part numbers I can find to what's been done to it.

perhaps you would be better off with the smaller oil filter (no idea on No)

You sure it wasnt the oil filter knocking ?
I know you said you have a smaller one now, but that picture of the old filter would indicate making a lot of noise.

Feedback through the steering wheel would be very obvious in that case so I’d suggest it was ruled out early on?

Yeah not the oil filter, its still on at the moment as its proving to be a bit stubborn coming off
Might have to hammer a screwdriver through it to get it to turn.

i have a good story about that, a young bloke couldn't get a filter off so told whack a screwdriver through it and undo it, well after the young bloke finished the oil change and started the car up oil spewed everywhere when someone looked in the engine bay guess how he had tightened the new oil filter back up

It could be worse... the filter on my wagon's small block never had oil smeared on the seal. Take a look at page 9

I know what the mystery part is... it’s carrot

you know after ya have a big night and chuck ya guts up there is always carrot in there... ya haven’t eaten carrot for ages and ya can’t understand how it got there but it’s there... so it must be just carrot. I had a similar experience with a small block chev years ago but I had driven it about 400 km that day and not even opened the bonnet and the air cleaners were all still on perfectly... bloody carrots I tell ya
