Pipes looking a bit nicer - going to do the heater pipes in copper to finish it off - still waiting on parts before I can put puff into the puff machine - belt setup looks good - final length was 1255mm A11 belt ImageImageImage

Looking good.

While you are waiting for the bits, see if you can turn it over by hand using the water pump belt/fan. Make sure everything turns over OK... if you accidentally dropped a nut into the machine during assembly or a vane is jammed, its a lot nicer to find out this way then at full-noise.

Pull the dizzy main HT lead (so it won't fire), and crank it over on the starter. This will get your fuel pump going, and will help prime the SU.

Cheers Harv - A couple of the parts are from Fred - spacers for the fan and the blower pulley to get alignment perfect so I'm doing all the other bits around it while I wait - also a couple of components for the SU as the bowl was sitting at too much of an angle to work properly as I understand it.

Top rad support also the other major component.
Had to order in drive belts which have arrived yesterday - pick up today.
The blower has been very carefully blocked off the entire time with caps only coming off for install and Ive turned it over just off the pulley to make sure all is free before a forced wind up.
Finished the manifold clamp washers yesterday so thats super solid now with new bolts - do you bother locktighting these in or just week up after a bit of run in?
What oil do you use in the SU? Do you just fill it up or to a certain level?
I'll keep tweeting hoses today - put a new alloy one in for vacuum to carb with fuel so I can remove the big ugly rubber ones.
Pipe guy coming back next week to do the heater hoses as I would prefer running it with water at least.
With the real possibility of stage 4 lockdown here in Melbourne we are also scrambling to get as much product out the door as possible and praying like F$%& we don't have to close the warehouse coming into the peak fathers day period for us - nothings ever easy.
Ive still got to work out a linkage solution but hoping a new arm for the SU I have ordered will give me a better ratio of stock lever to carb throw.
I picked up a very cool rocker cover with front mount breather that I dropped into Soda-blast yesterday and will pick up today to see if it's good enough to paint in between the fins and clear it to swap for the Speco which is bashed around a fair bit and not sealing very well - guy loves my socks so we have a trade agreement going for the small stuff :wink34:

Tighten the clamps after they have seen a few temperature cycles.

Welcome to the black art of SU damper oil. Opinions vary wildly... special SU oil, sewing machine oil, ATF.... depends on the dampening rate you need. Start with sewing machine oil.

Cheers - Ive ordered a tuning book for the SU also which will hopefully give me some tips in maintenance as well - how much do you put in? Fill to the max or is there a level you aim for?
Ive got a new Damper coming as well as the one in it has been through the wars.

Guidance from SU: the oil should be filled to a level just below the top of the hollow piston rod, so that when the damper is fitted it does not displace the oil any higher than the top of the piston.

The way that the SU slide moves under vacuum is complex - it depends on slide weight (have seen guys add bobweights to the top of slides to tune), spring rate (there are a variety of damper springs available, each with different stiffness), oil viscosity (no oil, sewing machine oil, ATF, special SU oil, engine oil....) and engine vacuum response (cam ramp profile, head gas flow, inlet manifold restriction etc).

No simple answer on what oil to use, other than for bog-stock cars (and even then many drivers have opinions on playing with oils to give a different/best response).
