So the repair to the panel behind the beaver panel all ties into where my new fuel tank will mount.

When I realised the state of play I had to think of the job as a whole and I started to plan where the fuel tank will mount .

I made a frame out of angle iron to replicate where the tank will sit so I could eye ball the situation, when I fitted the frame I seen that it was literally perfect to mount the tank up to so I dummy mounted the tank to see how it looked.

I’m very happy with how it looks and it’s great to see some progress with a new part mounted to the body, even though it is temporary.

Super happy I don’t have to cut the forward part of the body where the tank is mounted as I wasn’t looking forward to matching up the ribs in new sheet metal.

Like your methodology Drew. I’m impressed with the Mustang tank. Very good fit to the wagon and therefore got me thinking on my van.

With the mustang tank and all forrds really the tank sits on the frame eg mounted from the top.

Sorry if I'm nit picking but I just noticed how you have it am I'm assuming just a trial fit ?

The mustang tank seems to be the rage with fuel tank replacements at the moment, they are a good size and fit into most compartment areas.

Gday Greg and thanks for the input.
I did have a conversation with my panel beater mate about mounting in top or from underneath.
He said the same thing that they should be slotted in from the top.
So I went out at 9pm last night after a belly full of beers and dropped it in from the top to see how it looks.

I’ll have to make a neater frame but all in all it’s still a good start to give me more ideas on finishing it off.

Thanks John, it has been a lot of fun.

I have been having a think about the fuel tank mounting and I will have to have enough clearance in there for a skinny spare wheel.

It’s currently a tad over 170mm...
How much room do I really need for a spare tyre?

I’m unsure if simply measuring an old tyre width and adding 1/4 of an inch will be sufficient.

Can someone please measure the depth of their spare tyre well?

Hi Drew, I started a thread recently asking what size tyre can fit in. my spare wheel compartment is 175mm at the door but just shy of 165mm under the first crossmember. Clay was able to get a 175 tyre in his because he hasn't got the crossmember in his. Patrick

175 or 165 tyre is going to fit drew. Don’t need to over thinking it my 2c.

Next job for me is to mount a fuel filler neck somehow.

The neck off the old tank as we all know is fixed to the tank and is has a rubber grommet on the body to centralise it in the body hole.

I thought I may be able to somehow cut the neck off the old tank and fix it to the body but practically it won’t work well.

I am now considering an universal style filler neck that can be bolted into the body hole and simply running a rubber hose to the tank.

Unsure what style of filler neck or even where to start looking.

I would like to buy a new one but they seem difficult to locate in Adelaide so I can eye ball one.
Next option is to head out to a wreckers and have a look around for a second hand one.

Filler necks can be painful.

In another car I had I cut the filler neck off the tank and welded a flange plate on it like your second photo, then I used the same size pipe to get the angles correct to mount on the tank with a rubber grommet. It was fully welded, tested for leaks then I had it zinc coated on the outside and then used KBS fuel paint on the inside. Like I said a bit painful but it was in service for many years.

I bought my tank off Marty Dean in Queensland. It's a stainless box (a very elegant stainless box) with a 2" pipe stub sticking up out of it. You take the existing wagon fuel filler, cut to the length you like, and use heavy-walled fuel-grade hose (and hose clamps) to join the two. Easy to run, and the original filler neck mounts quite stable with the original rubber. Can probably do the same with the pony tank.
